At 175,457 words today. They finished their shopping, found some interesting things and soon face an interesting battle.
Discovery
Hidden Treasure.
She was about half-way around the room when she spotted a book that looked promising, but for none of the reasons she had been considering.
'AB Blood Types and Magic' by Vincent Branaghn
Sarah nearly gasped. Fighting the urge to rip the book from the shelf, she gently pulled it out and opened it, skimming the introduction. It was all about a theory dealing with magic from that other world and how people with the AB blood type seemed to be the only wielders of that magic. Cain had to see this. Not only was this by his father; it could be of great help against the Sorceror.
Planned
I just love the fact that the shopkeep snuck up on them.
“Find something?” the young healer asked, glancing at the book in Sarah’s hand.
The former barmaid nodded, holding the book up for Hikari to see. The young healer gasped, her eyes widening. “Why didn’t Blake tell us about this?” she asked softly.
Sarah shrugged. “Maybe he didn’t know it was here.”
“No,” an elderly female voice replied, causing both girls to jump. It was the proprietor. “He wanted your friend to find it for himself.”
“But what if he had missed it?” Sarah protested.
The shop owner smiled. “I would have made sure he got it. I have a few more things for you once you are done looking,” she explained. “Let me know if you need any help.” With that she walked away.
Blake
I really love Blake. His character gets more and more interesting as I write this. He sort of reminds me of a combination of Rufus Shinra and Reeve from Final Fantasy VII.
“Another friend of Blake’s,” Sarah said, frowning.
Hikari shrugged. “Well, he needs friends everywhere in order to run his organization.”
“Kind of like Crimson Wolf?” the former barmaid asked, smiling. She had a point, but still…Something about it bothered her. How many chess pieces did the head of ESES control?
A Gift from Jecht
Must not make Final Fantasy X reference, wait too late. :D
Cain frowned again as Sarah stepped forward. “You said you had some things you wanted to give us?”
The shopkeeper nodded, smiling. “First,” she began, holding up a finger, “I must inform you that you needn’t pay for anything and I won’t hear any complaints,” she added seeing Cain about to protest. “What you are doing for this world is payment enough. Second, these are gifts to our young friend here from his father.” She held up a katana that glowed a light blue and an equally glowing shirt of mythril armor and handed them to a shocked Cain.
Seriously Rufus Shinra
He studied them, his eye narrowed and yet filled with wonder. Sarah understood. First, how had his father known that he would prefer the katana and how had his father known he would visit here before confronting the Sorceror.
“Blake…” Cain muttered to himself, his eye still narrowed.
Of course! Blake had insisted that they go here. He had been planning this all along?
Growing
I really like to see how much Cain had grown in such a short time in regards to his father.
“Thank you,” Sarah said after an almost awkward pause as they waited on Cain and Bill. “If you don’t mind my asking, what is your name?”
The older woman smiled. “Gwen,” she replied. “I knew the young man’s father,” she added, gesturing at the door Cain had disappeared behind.
“Really?” Hikari asked eagerly.
“Yes, briefly.” Gwen glanced at the changing room door. “A smarter man I have not known.”
“I’m beginning to see that,” a deep voice spoke softly from behind the shopkeeper. Cain was making his way back out from the back, his new mythril shirt hidden under his normal shirt, only part of it showing where he had his top shirt unbuttoned. Bill came out shortly after, his armor poking out from under his short-sleeved tunic and over his undershirt.
“Thank you, Gwen,” Cain said, bowing slightly. “My father will not have died in vain when this journey is over.” He turned to go.
