Ed has passed.
This is theotherqpc, Ed's partner. For those who do not know, Ed had a massive heart attack about a month ago while in the hospital awaiting heart surgery. The doctors and nurses were able to save him then, but in the following weeks spent in ICU, his condition remained unstable and he never fully woke up, even two weeks after he was taken off sedatives.
I spoke with his doctor yesterday and asked for an honest, unbiased assessment of his condition. I was told that Ed had undergone multiple organ failure - kidneys, heart, lungs, and possibly brain - and had a 90% chance of death. In honor of wishes he expressed in many conversations we've had, I decided to withdraw life support.
Ed Sienkiewicz passed around 9 PM Arizona time last night, 28. Feb 2013. I held him in my arms as he passed; he was surrounded as well by several friends who, though we've only known them a few months, have quickly come to consider Ed family in a way I'm sure many of you understand.
I will be honoring Ed's wishes to be cremated, and am considering making a trip back to San Francisco to hold a memorial service and scatter some of his ashes. I will send further details as arrangements are made.
