Brief (around 300 words) personality outline of your character:
Ren acts very calm and collected at pretty much all times, maintaining a stoic façade. He comes off as cold and arrogant-he’s not one to wear his emotions on his sleeve, and it’s easier to pretend he doesn’t care. Particularly when he’s got a lot to brood about. If brooding were an Olympic sport, he’d be in the running for gold, as his entire focus and drive to fight was to save his fiancée-this has given him quite a bit to brood about, though he did what he could to hide it from Shinji and Yui.
In the movie, Ren tells Shinji that he is willing to fight his best friend to the death even when he knows there’s almost no chance that he will get the wish he hopes for, because he has to-he needs it more than anything else in the world, even if there’s no chance. He’s the patron saint of lost causes. He is driven and focused on his goals, willing to do just about anything to achieve them. I say “almost” because he does have a sense of decency. The first time he thought he killed somebody, he nearly lost it. He wants to have it in him to go to such horrible lengths to achieve his goals, but he doesn’t have it.
He’s loyal once you manage to get through to him and he really does have a good heart (for example, he went out of his way to babysit a young boy when he knew the kid was being targeted by a monster), but his cause is the most important thing in the world to him. Even while Eri was dying in the hospital, he continued his duties as a Rider, for her sake. Judging by his momentary hesitation when he received the new life, debating whether he could use it to save Yui or Shinji and ultimately holding to his vow to save Eri, he will not easily break a promise. Loyalty to friends itself is a promise, as no matter how many times he tried to turn against Shinji, knowing that he had to defeat him if it meant saving Eri, he always returned. He also won’t blame someone for something out of their control, such as when he told Yui that despite her brother’s involvement, what happened to Eri wasn’t her fault; she was just as much of a victim of Shiro’s machinations. While not frequently, he can act more sensitively about others’ feelings, particularly when he knows them well.
And despite all appearances, he’s not Batman.
Brief (around 500 words) history and background of your character OR link to a really good wiki page with their history. In either case, explain where they cut off from the timeline:
History applies to the Ryuki series, discounting the events of the movie (Episode Final) and the special (13 Riders). Time travel, oy.
Ren was always a troublemaker, constantly picking fights and making enemies. His fiancée, Ogawa Eri, held the only warm place in his heart and always told him to stop getting into trouble. On her birthday, he went to pick her up early at the lab at Seimeiin University, when he discovered she was being used as a subject in an experiment run by another student, Kanzaki Shiro, and a monster from the Mirror World attacked her and rendered her comatose. Shiro convinced Ren to join his Rider War for the chance at a wish that could restore Eri. Ren agreed and formed a contract with the monster that had attacked her, Darkwing, and became Kamen Rider Knight.
Ren then allied himself with Kanzaki Yui, Shiro’s younger sister, who was trying to solve the mystery of her brother’s disappearance and his connection to the Mirror World and the Kamen Riders. He also met Kido Shinji, an enthusiastic young reporter who stumbled into the war and became Kamen Rider Ryuki. While Ren wasn’t exactly eager to throw in his lot with Shinji, he had to admit it was easier joining forces against the other Riders until the time came for Ryuki and Knight to battle one another. Despite himself, Ren began to appreciate Shinji’s naïveté, and the two became friends. Shiro tried to drive them apart, but for all he reminded himself that his partnership with Shinji was temporary, Ren couldn’t seem to dissolve their friendship and Shinji refused to let him.
Finally, as the number of Riders dwindled and the mysteries began to be solved, Ren and Shinji learned that Shiro had set up the battle as a way to save Yui’s life, as she’d died as a child and was only living on a borrowed life from her reflection. Mirror World itself and all of its monsters had been created by the lonely, abused children. Shiro had reset time whenever things failed to go his way, but Yui rejected his attempts to save her, choosing to dissolve into nothingness instead. Ren and Shinji realized this was the end game, and when swarms of monsters invaded the real world, they teamed up for the last time to end it. However, Shinji had been mortally wounded and died in Ren’s arms, revealing that his wish was to seal the Mirror World and end the fighting. As the last Kamen Rider, Ren battled Shiro’s Rider, Odin, until Shiro killed his champion out of grief. Ren was presented with the new life, and Yui and Shinji flashed through his mind before he decided to hold to his promise and revive Eri. He made it to the hospital in time to place their engagement rings on her finger, but he died from his injuries before she awoke. At Yui’s request, Shiro reset time for one last time, ensuring that he and his sister remained together in the Mirror World. Together with their past selves, they sat down and drew pictures again as they created a new world-as Yui had wanted, a world where everybody was smiling and happy.
Ren arrives from before Shinji’s death in episode 49.
Sample post (just a general, everyday, puttering-around-the-ship post; please include a snippet of dialogue):
The idea came to him when he heard of how other crew members used the Sensoriums to make the cafeteria slop more palatable. It would certainly be the most creative mealtime, but as long it solved his problem, Ren didn’t care.
He set one tray aside and then set the other down on the floor as the room took on the appearance of a typical deserted area in the Mirror World. The tray of food in front of him then transformed into a Mirror Monster, and Ren pulled out his deck.
“Darkwing,” he called calmly.
Screeching, the Contract Monster flew in and attacked the Mirror Monster. Ren watched patiently until Darkwing “destroyed” it, freeing up a power core that he quickly devoured before turning on Ren and screeching.
“Don’t complain,” he insisted. “You got enough to eat. We don’t have Monsters for you to fight, and I’m not going to let you attack humans. You’re going to have to adjust.”
Darkwing screeched in annoyance but stopped arguing, taking the time instead to fly around. Meanwhile, Ren settled down and took up his own food, which had become a plate of garlicky gyoza. If it happened to be Shinji’s specialty, he pretended not to notice. If it also happened not to be as good as Shinji’s recipe, he pretended not to notice that either.
If the character has magic, mutant, or otherwise metahuman abilities, please explain what they are and outline EXACTLY how they function, as their powers may not work due to the nature of the ship or may need to be limited somehow:
With the power of the Advent Cards and his Contract Monster, Darkwing, Ren is able to transform into Kamen Rider Knight. Usually, he needs a mirror in order to do so, but the movie showed that if the Mirror World spills over into the real world (as happened in this point in canon), he can access his powers without a mirror. This also means that like a Mirror Monster, he can travel through any reflective surface. However, Kamen Riders are limited to traveling back through only the one surface they went through, so this will probably never come up for Ren. As Kamen Rider Knight, he has enhanced strength and durability, though his fighting style is mostly close-range. His cards are as such:
Sword Vent: Summons a short lance that he uses as a sword
Trick Vent: Can create up to eight copies of himself to attack
Advent: Summons Darkwing to attack
Nasty Vent: Darkwing unleashes a disorienting sonic attack
Guard Vent: Darkwing assumes a cape form and his wings act as a shield for Ren
Final Vent: Ultimate attack of Knight. Darkwing latches onto Ren’s back in cape form, Ren points his sword down, and Darkwing’s wings enclose him completely as they spiral downward, unleashing a devastating Rider Kick with sword-impalement.
Ren also has the Survive card, which allows him to upgrade Knight to Knight Survive and upgrades Darkwing to a stronger form, Darkraider. His cards are as follows:
Advent: Summons Darkraider to attack
Blust Vent: The wheels/fans in Darkraider’s wings unleash tornados at an opponent
Sword Vent: The sword half of Ren’s Visor (card reader) becomes a longer, more powerful blade
Guard Vent: The shield half of Ren’s Visor becomes a larger, more powerful shield
Shoot Vent: A crossbow forms on Ren’s Visor, allowing him to shoot energy arrows
Trick Vent: Same as above; can create up to eight copies of himself
Final Vent: Ultimate attack of Knight Survive. Darkraider becomes a motorcycle (yes, it’s that kind of show), and Ren rides him as he paralyzes the enemy. It then becomes a missile to blast into the enemy.
Darkwing gains strength by eating the powers of other monsters, or by eating humans. Because that is obviously a no-go on the ship, Ren will be doing whatever he can to try and keep him in a mirror (as a mirror monster, Darkwing can travel in and out of any mirror into the Mirror World) and fed some other way.
Non-superhuman special abilities of note (Is your character a master ventriloquist? A naturally-occurring super-genius? The best martial artist in the world? Say so here):
Skilled fighter, though in no particular martial art (mostly just brawling). Good at kicks thanks to his Rider Kick. He’s also great at doing the dishes.
