Ren’s parents were strict and traditional, pressuring him to excel. He rebelled young, lashing out by getting into fights all the time, which only made his parents get worse. Between his parents being emotionally unavailable other than when he was in trouble and other kids either hating or fearing him, he had a hard time learning to express emotions other than anger until he met Eri.
His father died when he was 17, with no known cause. But he was notorious for overworking, which Ren and his mother suspect caused it.
Ren stayed at home long enough to finish high school once his father was gone, then left. When he was about 20, he learned that his mother had died, and only because of obligation as their only child did he return for the funeral. Oddly enough, that was how he met Eri-she was attending the nearby Seimein University and happened to notice him leaving the cemetery, so she struck up a conversation. Ren wasn’t interested at first, but Eri assumed that it was because of grief, and she offered to help him clean out his parents’ house. He still doesn’t know why he agreed, and while they were cleaning, she noticed injuries from his most recent fight. She treated him and started to tell him off for getting into a fight, though she admitted she could see why he might have right now. It was the first time anyone ever gave him a break on the issue, and he asked her why, and she admitted that she’d lost her own parents when she was younger. He tried to tell her not to try to project her issues onto him, since he hadn’t gotten along with his parents, but she told him that a loss was a loss.
Ren had to stay in town long enough to sell the house, and Eri kept checking in on him to be sure he was okay. When he finally did sell the house, Eri invited him over for dinner, and one thing led to another. As he lay awake in her bed, he realized that he wasn’t going to be leaving for good.
