xlvi - further treatises on egyptian rivers

We've all been different people during floods. Next you're going to suggest we all look deeply into the significance of who we were the time the boat turned into a recreational children's camp.

It wasn't me. As far as I'm concerned, the matter is closed.

[Private to David.]

How are you?

Of all the complaints regarding the flood, I would never have anticipated that you would disapprove of your counterpart's behaviour.

I don't approve or disapprove. I don't have an opinion. I really don't care.

By the same token, I could care less what any of you got up to, either. It's not a matter of the choices you might have made if this or that or whatever had happened, because in the present it is immaterial. We're us, not them, and if someone wants to worry about why that is, they can do it without me.

Why mention it at all if you don't care?

Because I don't want anyone to expect anything different from me.

Who would, do you suppose?

Rhade. No, I don't want to talk about why.

Suit yourself.

I might have expected "Fordring" as an answer, of course.

Fordring's not going to listen to anything I say about whether it was me or not anyway.

He's your warden. Are you certain of that?

He's still going to want to talk to me about how I felt about it. Stupid bullshit.

Private emptyyourself August 24 2011, 13:56:14 UTC
Stupid in that you would be required to discuss it, or to admit that you have emotions at all?

I don't feel anything of significance about this, which is why I don't want to talk about it. The same goes for every other damn time something happens.

[Mmh. Maybe he shouldn't be taking this out on someone who in all likelyhood is going to vanish into Martha's world and never be seen again soon.]

You shouldn't have to apologize for what the other one did, either. Not you. This works both ways.

He was still me, in many ways. I apologize for the things he did because I am capable of them.

I apologize because to do anything else would be to admit I don't feel anything of significance about this - or that I don't care how he impacted the lives of the people aboard this ship - and that simply isn't true.

Or it's admitting you're responsible for his actions, when you aren't.

I don't know that for certain.

It's not that difficult. You weren't him. Why are you trying to be?
