Today I witnessed two contradicting events regarding human behaviour.

First, as I was awaiting the bus home, an elderly black (I can say black 'cause I don't feel it's derogatory and I don't believe in censorship. Also, It's my journal, bitches! haha.) lady was handing out christmas pamphlets on the corner. I obviously walked by treating it as usual city spam with no second thought. Well, up until this JERK walked by intentionally knocking them out of her hand and laughed mockingly. She attempted to bend over and pick them up, however didn't have the physical capability of doing so. She was reaching to the ground with no luck. How, as a person, could I just continue walking after that? I helped her retrieve all her pamphlets, and she offered me one as a form of gratitude.

How as a society have we become so numb and cruel to those around us trying to live their own lives in peace? Why do some go out of their way to hurt, not only those dear to them, but to strangers?

I let my mind wander and hopped on the bus once it arrived. I took my seat and observed others doing the same. A young mother got on attempting to restrain her bratty toddler into a seat. This kid wanted to do anything other than co-operate. There was obvious frustration on both ends of the spectrum. An older man sat beside them and started friendly chatter with the mother teasing about how much of a handful kids can be. He was probably in his mid-60's, wearing a trench coat and classic old man hat. You could tell by the wrinkles and lines around his sky-blue eyes that he was making a genuine attempt to assist the mother. He tamed the child by playing a game of peak-a-boo. The little girl laughed and the mother had an aura of relief surrounding her. He continued entertaining the child with trinkets he kept pulling out of his coat until they had reached their stop. Once the Mother and daughter got off, a woman walked across the bus and wrapped her arms around her husband, taking the trinket from his hand and placing it back into his coat.

Are people by nature good or evil? I'm a long way from figuring it out...
