Ok, so Diaspora is a project to provide a reasonable alternative to Facebook. You may have seen people doling out invites.
I don't have an account and at this point I don't want one.
I like their design, rather than a hosted service (like FB, MySpace and many Google products) they are working on a federated server design so people can run their own servers and still interact with people in the network, much like email.
Unfortunately I think they are both too early and too late to achieve their goals. Too early in their dev cycle, they don't have a distribution package setup yet and I have heard there is a significant security bug around setting up federated servers.
It is too late because the Facebook backlash is gone, you have die hard FB haters (like me) but most of the dissatisfaction is gone, so adoption will be hard.
