part 1

Simon didn’t think that the medication he gave River had worked. River assured him it had. She didn’t want him to change her medication. She wanted to see Sam again. Only Simon was being stubborn. Inara had told him about the bruise on her neck, the bruise that wasn’t really a bruise and Simon had thought she had been sleepwalking and fell. Simon was an idiot. He gave in though, and told her if she showed up with any more bruises he was going to change her medication. She knew he wouldn’t.

He’s waiting for her when she falls asleep. For some reason, he knew she would come, and he wanted her to. She’s not right there in front of her the moment she closes her eyes, but he’s waiting for her. River looks at the cheap motel room, concentrating on why exactly he would dream here of all places, when he could be dreaming of flying or home. She moves to one of the doors, the one she knows he’s in and knocks, knowing there’s really no need too.

But he still smiles down at her when he opens the door. He’s got loose fitting jeans and a plaid colored shirt on, the first couple buttons undone. His hair is hanging across his forehead and he reaches to her with one hand, pulling her into the room by the shoulder. He’s happy to see her. He didn’t think she’d come.

“I wanted too,” said River and he pulls her into his chest, the hand on her shoulder slipping into her hair. She feels fragile against him, in his arms that hide more power than they look. He smiles at her and her breath must have hitched in her throat because suddenly his fingers are brushing against her cheek.

“I would never hurt you.”

River bit her lip, her eyes turning down to look at the buttons on his shirt. His fingers continue to run along her skin, moving from her cheek to her jaw and down her neck.

“What’s you’re last name?” he asks softly, his eyes following the movement of his hand.

“Tam.”

“River Tam,” he murmurs, the backs of his fingers sending shocks down her body when he brushes them against the swell of her breasts. “How old are you?”

“It doesn’t matter,” it’s a matter of fact. It doesn’t matter how old she is. It’s a dream. She ignores the question and lifts her hands to his chest, fiddling with the buttons there. “You left bruises.”

“So did you.”

River’s eyes flickered back up to Sam’s face. She wanted to say something, anything, but instead of saying anything she rose up on her toes, her nose brushing along his jaw for a moment before he leaned down to kiss her. The moment their lips touched, electricity shot through them. River groaned at the sensation, gripping Sam’s shirt and pulling him closer to her. The hand on her chest moved to her waist, while the hand in her hair just tightened, keeping her close.

She never wanted to breath again, not if it meant moving her lips off of his. She didn’t know how long they stayed together, kissing slowly in the middle of the motel room, but eternity seemed to pass awfully fast. He pulled away from her, blinking quickly.

“I have to go,” he said breathlessly, his hands never leaving her body. River reached up to his face, tracing the curve of his cheek with her fingertips. He closed his eyes and turned his face into her palm.

“Soon.”

River was blinking her eyes open, staring at the ceiling in her room, someone knocking on the rice paper door softly. She turned over and climbed out of bed, her bare feet padding to her door and sliding it open to see Kaylee grinning at her, holding an apple in her hand, offering it to her. She didn’t hope that River could play, that she wasn’t too tired. River smiled at her and took the apple, munching on it as Kaylee asked if she was feeling alright to play.

She wanted to dream, but playing with Kaylee was the next best thing.

Sam wasn’t lucky enough to play. He woke to find Dean shaking him awake with a stern expression on his face. Sam blinked up at him, his eyes not wanting to open.

“What’s wrong?”

“Got a call from Bobby. Says he might know where Dad is,” the mention of his father caused Sam to sit up, flinging the covers he was sleeping under off his body, his eyes never leaving Dean’s.

“Let’s go.”
