River was something else entirely. Sam found himself staring at her ever since he made this notion. Every time she looked at Mal or Simon with such adoration, Sam couldn’t help but staring at her. Whenever she and Kaylee would play jacks or tag her eyes would light up. Kaylee would catch him staring and ask him to play with them. If River didn’t make him so damn nervous he’d notice that she would never look him in the eye. He'd catch her humming, or singing to the ship as she told him. He felt like an absolute moron whenever he was around her.
Especially at dinner. When everyone was talking and laughing, he would usually stay quite and stare at her, watch her laugh. Every dinner without fail, even if she was sitting right next to him.
“Sam?” Sam looked up across the table at Inara who was looking at him with a content look on her face, the rest of the table still chuckling. “You alright?”
“I'm fine,” said Sam with a grin. “Just, enjoying having a real meal. Haven't had a proper one in a long time.”
“Last one was with a girl,” said River, she was teasing him. “Jess,” he bristled slightly and looked over at her. He shook his head at her, fighting back memories and confusion.
“How do you know all that stuff?” he asked her, leaning his forearm against the table and looking her straight in the face.
“Who's Jess?” asked Jayne, his mouth full of food. Sam sighed and broke his gaze away from River in favor of Jayne, giving the older man a look.
“She used to be my girlfriend,” said Sam softly, looking down at his food and picking up his fork.
“Demon stuck her to the ceiling and lit her on fire,” Sam's head snapped onto River so fast it made his neck hurt. He felt his blood boil just slightly and leaned closer to her as the table when very quiet.
“How the hell do you know all that?”
“I just do,” said River, not flinching at him. Mal shifted uncomfortably at the end of the table and cleared his throat obnoxiously, getting Zoë to look up at him.
“Clearing your throat, Captain?” she asked, raising her eyebrow at him. Mal gave her a look and turned to Sam.
“We ain’t fightin’ at the table, Sam.”
“Sorry, Mal,” said Sam, turning away from River. The conversation picked up again quickly, but Sam continued to stare at River out of the corner of his eye.
“Stop staring at me, Sam,” said River softly, touching his hand under the table and turning her head to look at him. “You can’t read my mind.”
“You are so weird.”

Dinner drifted off peacefully, Inara making tea for Simon and Zoe, who were all talking adamantly with each other, still sitting at the table. Jayne had gone off a while ago to stare at his guns. Sam was content to head for bed, his eyes dropping slightly as he got up from his chair, stretching a bit as he headed off down the AFT passage to bed.
“You like me,” Sam paused upon hearing the sing-song voice behind him and turned, seeing River walking down the hall behind him, her hands behind her back and giving him a mischievous look.
“Are you reading my mind, River?” asked Sam playfully, thinking she was making fun of him. She shook her head, the same wicked look on her face.
“You think I’m pretty,” she said, stopping in front of him and looking up at him with light in her eyes. Sam swallowed nervously.
“You’ve very pretty, River,” Sam mumbled, suddenly feeling very claustrophobic.
“How badly do you want to kiss me?” asked River, a smirk tugging at the corner of her mouth, rising carefully on her toes. Sam swallowed again and took a step back.
“I have no idea where you’re coming from River-”
“You’re very much easy to read,” said River. “I promise I won’t tell Simon-”
She was daring him. Daring him to kiss her, and he hadn’t known he wanted to so badly until she dared him. He wasn’t thinking, god damn it she was just there. He leaned down and kissed her, his upstairs brain turning off for the moment, just to let him enjoy the feeling of River’s mouth against his. He felt the fabric of her dress underneath his palms and let his tongue brush against her bottom lip. Sam felt River’s fingers grip the front of his shirt, keeping him in place as she deepened their kiss, her tongue tangling with his, like they’d done it before.
Something down the hall clattered and kicked Sam’s upstairs brain on. Two things flashed through his mind as he pulled away from River: You’re a dead man and you’re a complete moron.
The former lingered for a while as he stared at River, watching something that looked like hurt flicker in her eyes. He opened his mouth to say something when Mal rounded the corner, dragging something behind him with Jayne pushing on the other side.
“Sam,” he said turning around, slightly surprised to see River and Sam standing there. “You mind helping us out?”
Sam shot him a weak grin headed over, looking back over his shoulder at River, who had disappeared from the hallway. Sam stopped and frowned for a split second before Jayne grunted at him to get his gorram ass on the move.
