CHAPTER SIX

“Hey!” Jensen shouted out, pointing as he did. “There’s another stream...” Both Jared and Jeff looked up to see where Jensen was pointing.

“That’s...” Jeff stared, his eyes growing wide. “Shit, that’s the same one.” Both Jared and Jensen did a quick double take and then another one. The group was silent as they all looked at the stream, the log and then the trees around them... and then back again.

“Fuck...” Jensen’s voice was frighteningly low. “You have got to be kidding me? This is a joke... and it’s NOT funny!”

“No... Jensen, stop it... both of you!” Jared was beginning to panic.

Jensen was looking for something to hit, “Fuck!!”

Jared simply looked like he was going to be sick. “It’s not the same log, it’s not the same log, Jeff.... Jen?!”

“It’s the same one!!” Jensen rammed his fist into a tree and cursed under his breath repeatedly.

“Look, it’s not!!” Jared tried again.

“It is! Open your eyes, Jared!” Jensen grabbed him by the collar and shook him hard.

“It’s not the same log... it’s not.” Jared began to sob, his breath coming in gasps. “It’s not the same log...”

“Fuck!!” Jensen and Jeff said together as they watched Jared fall to his knees next to the log.

Crying, Jared buried his face in his hand. “It’s the same log... it’s the same...” He curled his knees up to his chin and started rocking back and forth. “It’s okay... it’s okay.. I’m going to get home to my babies. I’m not going to die out here in these godforsaken woods. It’s okay....”

-------

They sat together, faces looking worn, tired and generally frazzled. Jensen took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes, gazing up at the setting sun. Jared and Jeff both fiddled with their cameras before Jeff set his on his lap. “Where do you want to camp today? I guess south hasn’t worked, so maybe tomorrow we should go east.”

Jared shook his head as if trying to understand something, “How did we walk south and end up at the same place?”

“We walked south all day, Jared... we walked south all fuckin’ day. I don’t know how we ended up here.” Jensen looked like he wanted to be anywhere else but where he was.

“Look,” Jeff was near the end of his rope, “I’m fuckin’ tired of moping around here all day. We have to think like... like... Winchesters.” He couldn’t believe he was saying this, “We have to get ready for...we’ve got to take shifts. We’ve got lots to do.”

---------

The next morning, Jensen was standing on the outskirts of their camp, a panicked look on his face. “Jeff!!!!” He shouted loudly into the trees as he ran back and forth. Jared was nearby, frantically looking through the trees as well. “Jeff!!!... fuck, Jay... we never go out of earshot! Jeff knows that!!”

“Come on, Jen... calm down.”

“How can I calm the fuck down?! Jeff!! JEFF!!” He shouted louder.

“He’s... he’s probably by the river or something...”

“If he was by the river, he could hear me from here,” Jensen’s face looked pale.

“Jeff!!” They both shouted after him.

“Shhh...” Jared waved his hand at Jensen, “Do, do you remember what he said yesterday? About that shit on his pack. About how... Jeff!!!?

Jared crossed over to be closer to Jensen, “We didn’t even... we didn’t even get woken up last night. Nothing even came to the tent, did it?” He was trying to sound hopeful, but was failing miserably. “Last night was a good night. There’s no way he... he just went for a walk.”

“Jeff? If you’re fucking with me, I swear to God, I’m going to kill you!”

“Let’s go...” Jared tugged at Jensen’s sleeve, “we’ve gotta find him. C’mon!”

Jensen jerked his arm, throwing Jared off balance. “We can’t even find the truck, Jay. How are we going to find him!?”

“He’s around, Jen...” Jared looked worried, “He just went out of earshot. That’s all. All right?” We’ll... we’ll relax, we’ll pack up, and when he’s back, we’ll be ready to go. Okay?”

Jensen nodded slowly, whispering. “I’m losing my mind, Jay.....”

------------

A couple hours later, Jeff hadn’t returned. As they had been packing, Jared and Jensen discovered that all of the older man’s belongings - his pack, clothes... everything - were still there. They were beginning to wonder whether Jeff had actually run off. But neither of them could face their deepest fears.

They waited another three hours, but still there was nothing. They decided between them to keep moving, hoping against hope that Jeff would be able to catch up with them at some point.

“How do you feel about east?” Jared asked, only to have Jensen ask him the same question in return. He thought for a moment, “Well, south didn’t work.”

Jensen raised an eyebrow, “Which Wicked Witch was worse, the Wicked Witch of the East or the Wicked Witch of the West?”

“The Wicked Witch of the West was the bad one.”

“Let’s go east then.” Jensen concluded, and so they set off. It was another few hours when they heard the cracking of twigs and leaves breaking in the distance. The pair turned towards the sound.

“What was that?!” Jared’s eyes were wide.

“Jeff!? JEFF!!!!” Jensen tried again, but there was no reply.

----------

The pair camped early, exhausted from walking and getting nowhere again. Not having eaten all day, both of them were daydreaming of what they would have to eat once they managed to make their way back to Vancouver.

Curled up in his sleeping bag and gazing at the star, Jensen sighed. “I’m going to have babyback ribs...”

“Babyback ribs?” Jared smiled at the thought.

“And a huge glass of red wine.”

“Yeah,” Jared agreed, “I could definitely have a whole keg of beer... and then...curl up with my babies.” He smiled to himself and fell silent.

They fell asleep, dreaming of things that had only a few days before seemed so within their reach. They were startled awake by the sound of moaning and screaming in the distance. They both knew instantly that it sounded like Jeffrey.

“Should we yell for him?” Jared moved closer to Jensen, who was reaching for the camera. “Is it a trick?” His mouth snapped shut as the screams of pain and anguish grew louder. “Jeff!?” Jared was up and out of his sleeping bag the same time as Jensen.

They moved out into the darkness. Jensen tried to get the camera to focus on anything at all. “Jeff!?!” There was silence. “Jeff!!” And still silence. “Where the fuck is it coming from!?”

The moans returned, and Jensen raced into the darkness. “Jeff!? Jeff!! Where are you? Tell me where you are!?” The cries seemed closer and louder.

“Oh shit...” Jared hovered near the sleeping bags, his own camera rolling.

“Fuck!” Jensen cursed loudly and paced the treeline, trying to see anything he could as he asked absently, “Do you think that’s them fuckin’ with us?”

“Jeff!?” Jared called out, trying to figure out where the sound was coming from now, “Is it over here?”

“No... it’s over here.” Jensen pointed ahead of him and then to the right. “JEFF!!! Fuck...I... I don’t know if it’s really him. I don’t know....”

“Jeff!?!” Jared called out too, his voice coming with panicked breath again. “I don’t even know where to look!”

Jensen screamed out, his voice growing hoarse with his cries, “Tell us where you are, Jeff!” There was silence again and the two men waited for more cries, but there were none. Eventually, they crawled back into their sleeping bags.

“Jen...” Jared’s voice sounded almost childish, “don’t fall asleep.”

“I can’t fall asleep.” He sounded exhausted.

“What... whatever it is, it knows Jeff is gone...” Jared mumbled.

“If that was Jeff, he would have said where he was.” Jensen spoke matter-of-factly. The two of them said good night to each other and waited in the darkness, listening to the silence around them.
