Waking up in her bed, last night’s makeup smeared over her face, Alex pushed her hair out of her eyes and looked around. There, staring her right in the face, was the picture of her and Justin on the family vacation, their sunglasses covering their eyes, smiling happily. Thinking back to that moment, she wished that she could go back to that point. Before she realized her feelings for Justin. Before they started chipping away at her from the inside.
After the Wizard Competition they had been in on the island, Alex started to realize that her feelings towards Justin weren’t just sibling affection, but something more. She started noticing things about him. The muscle tone he was building as he was training to become a monster hunter. The way he styled his hair. His soft, kissable lips. The way he’d feel, pressed against her. As the weeks and months went by, the thoughts would increase in frequency. When she was with Mason, all she could think about was Justin’s arms wrapped around her, holding her as he kissed her, her hands roaming all over his body. Whenever mason opened his mouth, she tried so hard to pretend it was Justin’s voice.
Then when Juliet and Mason disappeared after the fight in Transylvania, Alex made a vow to herself that she would try and stop thinking of Justin like that. But, her promise didn’t last for long. Seeing him so depressed about Juliet’s aging, made Alex wish he would just forget about her. Juliet hadn’t been good for Justin. It wasn’t just that Juliet had been a vampire. It was also the fact that Justin seemed to not need Alex as much anymore, and that really hurt Alex. Alex had always needed Justin. Justin was the one that could help her fix her magical mistakes. He was the one who could make her happy, when she was sad. It wasn’t her dad that she worried about meeting her boyfriends; it was Justin.
Getting up, Alex felt her body hurt, and she felt a little hungover. Seeing the empty bottles on her nightstand made her wince a bit, before picking up her wand and casting a spell to make her hangover go away. As she cleared away the bottles, there was a knock on her door. Knowing that it was Justin, she called out to him, and started wiping away the makeup. When her face was cleaned, she opened the door, then went back to her bed, and sat down, pulling the blanket up to her chin. Justin came in and sat on the end of her bed, picking up a random bottle of perfume that had been sitting on the floor next to his foot.
“Are you ok?” he asked, concern written all over his face. Seeing it made Alex’s heart break just a little bit more, a piece of it crumbling away. “Yeah. I’m good. Just tired.” She replied. He winced at the obvious lie, before trying to smile at her. “I made waffles. Do you want some? Mom, Dad and Max are all gone for the day. There was a sandwich convention and Max wanted to see if he could go and get free food there.” Rolling her eyes, Alex nodded at Justin. “Sure, I’d love some waffles. Let me have a quick shower first, ok?” He nodded back to her, and left her room. Alex walked over to the bathroom, and hopped in the shower, wincing when the soap hit the perfect little cuts on her arm. Looking down at them, she sighed and felt a tear slip from her eye and mix with the water flowing around her. Getting out, she quickly went downstairs and sat down quietly at the table, playing with the waffles on her plate. Justin watched her from the kitchen, his hands clenching around the spatula he held, emotions swirling through him. Turning back to the waffle iron, he took the last one off, and placed it on his plate, and sat down next to Alex, his hand resting lightly over hers, feeling it tremble. Knowing what she was feeling, and knowing there was no way they could ever say it.
