Edited the "my Dad" and "my Mom" to "Dad" and "Mom" but otherwise untouched Augno excerpt.
Background Info: Ian has a crush on Nathan, but he is currently dating his best friend Michael. Jackie is his other best friend. Ian's been depressed for a week after his brother Lance saw him about to kiss Michael and hasn't talked to him. The rest is explained in the text I think.
I enjoyed the rest of the weekend, laughing and fooling around with Michael and Jackie. We went to the park and swung on the swings, got ice cream, chased squirrels, etc. Avoiding the house actually lifted my mood. By late afternoon on Sunday I felt empowered. You know what, I told myself, nothing did change. I shouldn't have let this affect me. Therefore I resolved that night that I would come clean once and for all. After a good fill of Jackie's amazing BBQ chicken I was dropped off at my house with a thousand ways to express and explain my issues to my family and a thousand backup plans. Okay, maybe only one, which was to head to Jackie’s house if things got bad.
I was not surprised to find my parents waiting for me in the kitchen as I walked into the house, intending to grab an apple to eat. They watched me with eagle eyes as I washed the piece of fruit before taking a bite.
"Ian," my father said, pulling a chair out from under the table. "We need to talk."
I made my way over to the empty seat and plopped down. I continued to eat my apple and looked at my parents, who were sharing a secret look which I guessed meant that they were debating who was going to break the ice. Finally I decided I would do it.
"I'm bisexual," I blurted out. Well, that wasn't the bluntest way to come out to my parents… Nevertheless I wasn't keen to wait for their reactions before continuing to eat my apple. Eating it was probably better than having a breakdown. They were silent for a moment, sharing looks once again.
Finally Dad asked, "Are you sure? Not gay or experimenting?"
I nodded vigorously. I wasn't actually processing what they were saying, but if I had not been so wound up, I probably would have found the second question pretty interesting.
"Oh. And this is a problem because..." Mom almost seemed to shrug as if she thought this was common news.
"You mean, it's no big deal?" I was expecting my parents to freak out more. "I just told you that I'm bisexual! Meaning I like guys and I like girls!"
"Son, we don't care about your sexuality. We care about your sanity," Dad said. Mom nodded in agreement. Dad started reaching across the table with his hand. Mom did the same. Soon we had formed a Y with our arms.
"Next time, just tell us so we know. We want to help you and protect you. We love you no matter who you like," Mom said.
"But we don't want you dating any scum off the street," Dad added. I laughed.
"Actually, I'm sort of dating Michael," I admitted sheepishly.
"Michael? He's gay?" Dad looked shocked.
"Can't be too surprised, if he's parading around in those short shorts," quipped Lance from the kitchen. I immediately stiffened but turned around. Lance hadn't talked to me in a week.
"Lance," Mom said, "please sit down." Lance happened to also be holding a banana in his hand but it hadn't been opened yet. Dad confiscated it so he wouldn't try.
"Ian, I'm sorry. I was just shocked, and angry. I thought you had been keeping secrets from me and didn't trust me," Lance said.
"Lance..." Lance extended his arm and put it on top of the pile that already formed. I felt the new weight and appreciated the sign of acceptance. "I'm sorry. I'll come clean. Jackie told me that Michael liked me and then we started dating a few weeks ago. We haven't even kissed, but were about to when... Anyway the thing is I still don't really like Michael that way. You know, that way... It's hard to explain. I like him, I'd kiss him..."
"You don't have to tell us the details!" Lance exclaimed, waving his other hand around. I laughed.
"Okay, I won't keep secrets, just keep it PG-13," I said with a smile.
"You better be keeping it PG-13," Dad warned, "or else you won't be seeing Michael anymore."
"Dad!" We all laughed. I was especially happy that Lance smiled at me.
"Okay kids, we're off to bed. Don't stay up too late," Mom said before she and Dad stood up. I gave Lance a wink before we raced to the computer. It was good to have my brother back.
