I'm going to cross post this to
all_for_hook, as it has a nautical flavour, but wanted to share it a bit wider, as I think it's fantastic!
This is one of my favourite sea shanties - a hauling song called South Australia, this version performed by Cornish male singing group Fishermen's Friends, and now my favourite version of all time - they've all worked as fishermen or lifeboat men, so all know the sea, and they live in a small village called Port Isaac in Cornwall *glares meaningfully* yes, you know who you are...and I had to accidentally find them on the net! They've released an album this year, and I haven't heard all of it yet, but the album version of this is nowhere near as good as this live one - for one, it has musical accompaniment, and lacks this one's power.
Close your eyes, imagine the sound of wind in sails and creaking rigging, and men hauling rope as they sing this to keep time while you listen - this really is the way a sea shanty should be sung! It's full of raw male power - it's truly wonderful!
