Part III- The Carnival

When Reni finally drove into Abermill it was almost 6 o'clock. We drove about five miles until Reni turned into a small, dirt road, perpendicular to the main road we had been on. I couldn't help but to think if someone didn't know where they were going they would easily miss the road.

Reni looked forward without expression. It was clear that her mind had wondered on to other things and she was focused on getting there. I considered that she may be nervous, but I quickly disposed the thought when a smile shot across her face.

She slowed down the car and looked at me.

"What?" I said, laughing and suprised.

"Here we are. Just gotta find a place to park" Her blue eyes widened and her bleached-white teeth seemed to illuminate her face.

I looked around and saw nothing but a small vacant grassy field and rows and rows of dense, tall trees.

"Uh.. Ren?.. This doesn't look like a carnival to me" I said, confused.

"haha. Shh silly. Come on. get out!" Ren said, as if I were missing something apparent to everyone else present.

I got out of the car and Reni ran around the car and grabbed my arm. She beginning running toward the wall of trees.

"R-Reni!" My voice shook from trying to keep up. "I don't think we should just run into the wood-" I stopped talking to watch where I was going.

Reni wasn't listening at all. She let go of my hand and disappeared into the dark cluster of trees, the only thing visible was the tail of her long blonde hair, which slipped quickly into the dark leaves.

Not wanting to stand alone in the blue/gray light of coming-night, I ran after her. Surprisingly the wall of trees was not as thick as it appeared. When I broke through to the other side, my mouth dropped in amused awe.

A huge, lighted Ferris Wheel stretched for the darkening sky and rides, lights, stands, and people covered a more vast field. I looked around for Reni. When I didn't see her , I felt a slight twinge of panic.

"Great" I thought. "You're miles away from home and you can't find your best friend"

But, just then, Reni's bubbly voice screeched my name across the crowd.

"Commmmmme on! I thought you'd never get here!" Reni teased. She was hanging on the arm of a tall boy with a muscular build of a football player. Tanned with short gray/blonde hair and blue eyes. I laughed to myself and thought how typical "abercrombie" they looked standing together.

"I'm coming! I'm coming!" I shouted and begin to swivel and twist through the crowds of teens, children, and hugging couples.

When I finally reached Reni and the boy, her face was flushed and her smile was the biggest I think I'd ever seen on her.

"This is Todd." Reni gushed, looking at me as if to say "Isn't he hott?!"

"Hey Todd" I said, laughing. He looked me up and down and uttered a simple "Hi".

"Ohhh I almost forgot!" Ren said, trying to sound as casual as possible. But, knowing Ren, I knew something was up.

"What's that?" I said, sounding sarcastic, though it was clear no one picked up on it.

"This is Kevin. Todd's friend" Reni seemed to reach behind her in the crowd of guys and pulled out a tan boy wearing a wife beater and ripped jeans. He smiled kindly and looked into my eyes.

"Hello there, mam!" He said, stretching a tan and freckled arm out to me.

"Hey" I said, taking his hand and smiling as nicely as I knew how. I bugged my eyes at Reni, trying to get my "yeah thanks for telling me!" point across, but , typical of Reni, she didn't notice.

Kevin didn't let go of my hand, but simply pulled me toward him so that we were walking side-by-side holding hands. I didn't want to like it, but I couldn't help but blush and smile as the sweet , southern boy told me jokes and picked at me while we all walked toward the Ferris Wheel.

"Four please! Two seperate buckets!" Reni squealed with excitement.

Reni and Todd jumped into their bucket quickly and she nuzzled herself into his side like a puzzle piece, resting her head on his shoulder. The next bucket came in clinking and slow. Kevin turned to me and smiled.

"Not too romantic" he laughed.

"Well hey, it works" I teased back.

He opened the small door and helped me in, then sat down next to me. I was slightly nervous and didn't know if I should cuddle up to him or not. I didn't bother to ask Reni how long she had known Todd. Probably another "mutual friend hook-up" as she called them. Although I love Reni , I had never bothered getting to know any of her male interests to well, considering they'd be gone within a few weeks, anyway.

I sat with my hands in my lap and looked out over the carnival. Todd let out a laugh-sigh and put his arm around me. I leaned in a little more and relaxed my hands.

"So.." he said, as if he were thinking while looking off at the lighted atmosphere. "Reni tells me you live around here"

"Yeah.. well no. Not here literally, this is Abermill. I live in Hankfort" I said, seeming to never reach a point.

He laughed at me. "Haha. Yeah I know"

"Oh" I felt alittle embarassed for making him seem dumb by going into detail.

"Well I'm from Delby" he said. I noticed his voice was sweet. Like he couldn't have a bad intention if he tried.

"Oh. But that's nearly four towns away" I said, confused as to how Reni would have known them.

"Football" he said, looking at me.

"Im sorry, what?"

"Football. That's how Reni met us. Todd and I play defense for the Delby High Trojans. Reni had cheerleading camp this summer at our school and Todd talked to her after practice a few times"

"Ooooh okay." I laughed. "She never mentioned him". I sighed. "And to be honest, haha, she didn't mention you either"

"Ah jeez, this must be awkward then. Todd told me you knew about tonight" He seemed disappointed and alittle embarassed.

"No no no! Its not like that! Tonight has been great so far! Its a...a.. Pleasant surprise!" I tried to save myself.

His angular jaw broke into a smile and I felt relief rush across my body.

"So, a beautiful girl like yourself doesn-" The ride jerked to a halt mid-sentence.

We looked around and laughed, getting off the ride. I didn't see Reni or Todd anywhere, but I figured I'd run into them later. Kevin and I walked around the carnival and played a few games, then ate corn dogs and watched fireworks. In the middle of laying back watching the fireworks, a loud, annoying ringtone broke the noise.

"Sorry. I gotta take this" Kevina apologized. He got up and walked away. Probably somewhere not so loud I thought to myself.

I lifted myself with my arms and leaned back on them, with my legs laying out in front of me. Aftering watching the fireworks for alittle longer, I studied the sea of blankets and people laying out under the show.

Scanning the edge of the field, I saw a line of trees. I made out the profile of a guy's body laying against a tree looking out across the field. His light brown hair fell across his face when he took off his hat to wipe away sweat. Leaning forward (very obviously) I realized where I recognized the boy from. It was the boy from the gas station early that day. He must have felt me staring because he turned swiftly and looked in my direction.

I yelped and flattened myself on the blanket. After a few minutes I got up again and he wasn't there anymore. Breathing a sigh of relief, I lay back on the blanket to watch the show.

Before I knew it, I was asleep on the blanket. When I woke up , there was a cardboard colored napkin laying on the blanket next to me.

"Sorry, I didn't want to wake you. My mom needed me to come home and watch my little brother. I had a lot of fun with you tonight. Call me. 345-8823. - Kevin" A cheesy smiley face was drawn next to it.

I laughed and rolled the napkin up and put it in my purse. Almost everyone that was out before was gone now. When I checked my cell phone, I realized why. It was 11:00.

Sighing, I walked back to the direction of the car, along the edge of the field, running my hands across the random tree trunks. I jumped when I heard a noise from inside a cluster of forest behind the trees.

Curious, I leaned in and looked into the darkness. Out of the leaves I could make out a blanket laying on the leafey ground. A bare muscular back moved up and down slowly and jeans hung loosely on the guy's legs.

Shocked, I widened by eyes and tried to make out more. A feminine heavy sigh sounded from under the guy and thin, tan, arms stretched from under him and ran fingers down his back. Looking harder, I noticed a huge, gold ring with a amethyst stone on the thin, petite hand.

With dumbfounded shock, I put it all together and realized that I recognize the guy's blonde gray short hair and the ring.

Although I realized that I was watching Reni and Todd have sex in front of me, I couldn't look away. With shock and curiosity I looked on.

Just then, I felt a heavy hand on my shoulder.

"hey" I recognized the souther voice.

"hey!" I shrieked. Trying not to sound like I was up to something.

"are you o-" Another moan let out from behind the trees and the guy from the gas station's expression changed. "kay" he finished his sentence, looking confused.

"uhh.. i .. well.." i couldn't find anything to say to him. "YES! IM WATCHING MY BESTFRIEND HAVE SEX AND SHE HAS NO IDEA!" was alittle out of the question.

"are they? uh.. you know?" he said.. trying not to let the little curve on his lip turn into a full-blown smile.

" I guess so. I mean. Don't think I'm some freak. I don't usually do this. Haha.. well not usually don't cause I never do. Well not never do. This is just my first time wat-"

"hey dont worry about it" he laughed, cutting me off.

He looked at me in the face and i felt like covering it and running away.

"you uhh.. wanna go somewhere else?" he laughed.

"yeaaaaaaaaaah" I said, laughing, feel more relaxed.

"She's my bestfriend. She drove me here. I was just looking for her because I fell asleep watching the fireworks" I said, trying to offer some sort of explanation.

"alone?" he said, raising one brow, skeptically.

"Yeah. Well no.. Reni, my bestfriend," I gestured toward the woods, "she set me up with that guy's friend. But I guess he had to go. He left me a note on a napkin" I said, sounded like I didn't really know what to make of it, because I didn't, really.

"Oh I see" He said. Looking down at his shoes and leaning over to pick off a burr.

"Yeppp" I said. Feeling awkward.

"Hey, Im thirsty, you want a coke?" He said, motioning toward a crowded stand.

"Oh no thanks" i said, trying to be polite, though I was dying of thirst.

"Come on" He pulled my arm and we started walking to the stand.

I felt different than with Kevin. I wanted the gas station guys hand or hug him or do something spastic. It was like a rush of energy shot through him into me, just by touching. But to avoid being weird, I calmed myself and tried to maintain.

He looked back and smiled a big, beautiful, white smile. His hair swept across his face, flirting with his deep blue/green eyes. My heart could have melted there, but I just breathed deeply and smiled.

We sat down at a dirty table and talked about random things, as children and noisy adults listening to the stage band. He had bought me a coke and basket of frieds, although I told him several times he didn't have to. My phone started ringing and I apologized and told him I'd only be a second. When I walked over behind the "Port-a-Potty"s I flipped open my phone and yelled into it.

"Hello!?" I said, covering my left ear to try and hear better.

"HEY!" It was Reni. "Where are you?!" She said, excitedly.

"Over by the shitters" I said, unethusiastically, realizing just how awful they smelled.

"Okay. Well can you meet me by the car in 5?" She said, laughing.

"Yeah sure" I said, batting at a fly.

"k. love ya"

"mk you t-" but the phone clicked off. I laughed to myself and begin walking back to the gas station boy.

"Hey, uh, I have to go. I guess my friend is done" I laughed.

He laughed and smiled. "Okay. I had alot of fun with you tonight"

"Yeah.. me too" I said.. as if I were recollecting. I was never used to a guy being so upfront and not afraid to say what he wanted.

I stood in silence for a few seconds then he got up to, what i thought, was give me a hug. But, leaning back, he grabbed my Coke and basket of fries.

"Eat up! And I dont care if you're not hungry!" He said, smiling playfully.

"haha. Okay. Thanks again. I guess Ill see you later" I didn't want to leave. I wanted to talk to him all night.

"You betcha. Anytime you need some 'tergent you know where to come" He smiled again and tilted his head to the side, shoving his hands in his pocket.

I laughed and turned around and started to head to the car. When I got there Reni was on her tip toes hugging Todd goodbye. She kissed him on the lips and squealed.

"Ill miss you" She said, looking into his eyes as if they were long time lovers.

"Ill miss you, too" He said, hugging the little blonde close to his wide, muscley chest.

I walked in silence to the other side of the car and got ready to get in. I figured it would rude to say anything at this point.

"Hey! Nice meeting you" Todd said to me and did a check-wave.

"huh? Oh yeah. You too" I gave a slight, short smile and ducked down into the car, closing the door.

I leaned back in the seat and waited for Reni to get in.

"Soo..?" She said, smiling. "How was it?"

"How was Kevin?" she said, as if she couldn't believe I didn't immediately know who she was talking about.

"Kevin.. Oh. Yeah.. it was alright. I mean.. it was fun. But he had to leave early" I said, trying not to sound unbelievable.

"aww great! Thats so cute!" she said , smiling.

"How about you and Todd?" I asked. I didn't want to seem like I knew about the woods.

"Oh! It was positively great! We watched the fireworks and talked the whole time about life! We really connected" she said, excitedly.

"thats great." I wanted to laugh and say something like "Yeah I bet you guys really connected, alright". But apparently Reni wasn't ready to tell me, so I kept mum.

The rest of the ride home we talked about what we wanted to do this summer and how it had been so far. Only one more week until fourth of july.

When I finally got home, it was 1:30 am. I walked in lazily and sat my coke and cold fry basket on the counter. I poured the drink out and started to dump the fries. Confused, I noticed a napkin at the bottom of the basket, beneath all of the fries. I picked it up and looked at it, a smile cracking across my face.

"I had fun with you tonight. You're amazing. And I'm Tristan. Nice to meet you. P.S- I hope this isn't as bad as the other guy's note."

A little cartoon face with a goofy expression followed "note" on the greasy napkin.

I laughed and carried the napkin upstairs with me.

Laying down I looked at the ceiling and repeated the name on my lips.

"Tristan" I said aloud, in a southern accent.

"Hey Tristan!" I said, excitedly.

"Yes. One year! And Tristan and I are so happy!" I said laughing, as if I were talking to one of the air-head girls at school about an imaginary anniversary.

Laughing at how lame I sounded, I closed my eyes and dreamed of fireworks, and food, and coke, and a lull and blurred vision of sex with a southern boy.
