The first thing Cloud was aware of was the dull pounding in his head. Then the rest of his body chimed in with complaints. He was sore and it felt like something might have crawled inside his mouth while he was sleeping. The first attempt to open his eyes resulted in a hiss as the light hurt, making his headache worse. Cloud instinctively shut his eyes again and pulled the bed covers over his head.

Beside him, something shifted.

Cloud froze. He lived alone. He had a single bed. His covers were blue, with a star pattern - not plain black like the covers currently shielding him from the sunlight peeking through the completely unfamiliar curtains.

This was not his bedroom.

In fact, he had never been in this room before.

Oh goddess. It was not such a big leap to the conclusion that he had got completely drunk the previous night and had sex with a complete stranger. Oh goddess.

‘Please… at least let it be someone moderately attractive…’

He could not remember much of that night. Zack had taken him out to a bar, though he had not wanted to go. He was quite content to sit at home, on his own if he had to. But Zack was insistent, claiming that ever since his break up a couple of months ago, Cloud had become a recluse. Totally not true, in Cloud’s opinion. He went out. Just… not as much.

But Zack had not stopped pestering him until he agreed. Then he had just… left him at the club in the company of a total stranger, while he went to find some other friends. He had a message for Angeal, apparently, that was too important to be left to a text or a phone call or something - Cloud had not asked for details, figuring that it was none of his business.

After that… things started to get blurry. There had been the beautiful, gorgeous stranger buying him drinks, a drunk redhead hitting on him and then…

Everything went blank.

Slowly, Cloud sat up and risked a glance at the body next to him.

Silver hair, a perfect body and… startling green eyes staring at him.

“Awake, I see.”

“Uh… hi…” Cloud said, blushing.

“If you would like to shower, the bathroom is down the hall, second door on your left,” the man said, sitting up. Utterly shameless, he walked stark naked across the room and picked a robe off the back of his door.

Cloud blushed and looked away as he slid it on, quickly fastening it shut. Then he picked up another and tossed it to Cloud.

“Go clean yourself up.”

Cloud nodded, quickly putting the robe on before scampering out of the door. Second door on the left, right? Cloud pushed a door open experimentally and gave a sigh of relief when he found it was the right one.

The bathroom was spacious, decorated with white tiles and polished silver. The shower was the biggest Cloud had ever seen inside someone’s home. Cloud was amazed. He resisted the urge to go poking through the cabinets though, reminding himself that he was not a nosy old woman but he was quite curious about the man who had brought him home last night.

The breathtakingly gorgeous man. Cloud could not even remember his name. He knew he had been very drunk that night - he had to be, because letting random strangers take him home and fuck him had never been his style. He had never seen the appeal in one night stands. Last night, though not his first time ever having sex, had been his first time with someone he did not know.

Was this a normal thing for that man? Was he used to just bringing random people home like this? He certainly seemed to have certain expectations, pointing Cloud in the direction of the bathroom the way he had.

Cloud thought about all that as he locked the door and stepped into the shower.

The warm water felt good running over his aching body. He turned it up higher.

He’d had sex with a stranger. While drunk. He couldn’t even remember it! He wasn’t sure what was worse - that he could not remember sex with such a beautiful man or that said man probably thought he was some kind of slut. What other kind of person would let himself get so drunk and fuck a total stranger?

The thought tore at him. He’d been so drunk… He wondered how drunk the other man had to be to take him home? It must have been a lot. Why else would someone like that have brought Cloud home?

His eyes burned. He had not been enough for his last boyfriend to stay, nor the one before that… He should probably just stick to one night stands. Less time to get attached. Maybe if he was lucky, he could persuade another cute guy to take him home…

His body began shaking. He wouldn’t cry. He wouldn’t cry in some stranger’s shower, feeling filthy and humiliated. He wouldn’t. That kind of thing would wait until he was home.

Except that he was already crying.

Fuck.

He was truly pathetic.

There was a quiet knock at the bathroom door, just barely audible over the sound of the water. Cloud stuck his head out of the shower to respond.

“Y-yes?” Cloud called out, hating the way his voice wavered.

“I’ve gathered up your clothes for you. I’ll leave them just outside the door.”

“Thank you.” Cloud was not sure whether he was heard or not but there were footsteps retreating now.

He could not stay in the shower all day, as much as he would like to avoid the other man. Cloud glanced about for shampoo and shower gel to begin cleaning himself up. There were several bottles lining a shelf inside the shower - all expensive brands that made Cloud feel guilty to use them. He used the bare minimum to clean himself up and then dried himself afterwards as quickly as possible, avoiding looking in the mirror. His clothes were just outside the door as promised. He dressed as quickly as possible and slipped out of the room.

The hallway smelled of pancakes. Cloud blinked as the smell hit him and his stomach rumbled despite the hangover he still had. He felt better for the shower though. His head hurt, but he forced himself to ignore it and follow the smell.

Downstairs, he found his way to a large, well-equipped kitchen. The stranger was there, standing over the cooker. He looked surprisingly domestic in a white apron and sweatpants. Given the outwardly cold behaviour of his host when they had woken up together, Cloud had not expected to see him dressed in such a relaxed manner and nor had he expected breakfast at all.

“Do you like pancakes?” the man asked.

Cloud nodded mutely, fidgeting awkwardly with his clothes.

The man smiled faintly. “Good. There’s plenty so help yourself. There is also coffee in the pot, if you care for it.”

Shyly, Cloud edged closer to the table and took a seat. “Um. Thanks…” He reached for a plate and took a couple of pancakes before pouring himself a cup of coffee. “Uh…”

“Yes?” The man was looking at him curiously.

“I… I can’t actually… remember your name…” Cloud bowed his head, the volume of his voice lowering with shame by the end until he was little more than a whisper.

“Oh. Well, I suppose you were rather drunk last night…” Oddly, the man did not seem offended. “You’re Cloud, aren’t you? My name is Sephiroth.”

Cloud nodded, feeling even worse because the man - Sephiroth - had remembered his name. What must he think of Cloud now? Feeling utterly dejected, Cloud poked at his pancakes but did not make any attempt at eating them.

“Hungover?” Sephiroth asked, sliding into a seat opposite him. “Perhaps I should not have bought you so much to drink…”

“…I’m alright. I feel a bit better after showering,” Cloud replied quietly.

“That’s good. Eat up - it should help you feel better as well,” Sephiroth said, helping himself to some pancakes as well.

Cloud attempted a half smile and nervously started eating. His second forkful was more enthusiastic though. It was entirely possible that these were the best pancakes he had ever had. A part of him wished he could have them for breakfast every day but that thought only served to remind him that after he left, he probably would not see Sephiroth again. That was how one night stands were supposed to go, right? Fuck once and go separate ways?

Suddenly, swallowing became rather difficult. Cloud chewed slowly, wondering if he should be hurrying to get out of Sephiroth’s house or not.

“By the way, Zack has left numerous messages on my phone. I suspect he has done the same to you. You should call him later and let him know you’re alright,” Sephiroth said, interrupting Cloud’s thoughts.

Cloud gasped and almost dropped his fork. “I completely forgot about Zack!”

“As did I,” Sephiroth confessed, smiling wryly. He pushed Cloud’s phone across the table to him. Cloud had not even noticed it was there but he supposed that Sephiroth had picked it up while gathering up his clothes.

Cloud quickly pressed a couple of buttons to check his messages.

‘You have 53 new text messages. You have 27 new voicemail messages.’

“Shit. He must be really worried,” Cloud muttered. He opened a few of the texts.

‘Cloud, where r u?’

‘R u w/ Seph?’

‘R u mad @ me?’

‘Dude, answer ur fone!’

‘Im srry, buddy. Call me?’

‘R u ok?’

They all continued in that manner and Cloud suspected the voicemails would also be along the same lines. Cloud grimaced, not looking forward to calling Zack. He hoped the other man was not too upset with him after this.

“Is everything alright, Cloud?”

Cloud looked up into Sephiroth’s concerned gaze. “I… yeah. Zack’s just… worried about me, that’s all. I think I might be in trouble when I next see him though…”

“Oh?”

Taking a deep breath, Cloud confessed, “I don’t…normally do things like this. Get drunk and… with someone I don’t know…”

Sephiroth leaned back a bit. “Ah, I see. It is not a usual practice for me either.”

“It isn’t?” Cloud blinked. He honestly had not expected that. He blushed suddenly, realised that he could easily have offended Sephiroth. “I mean…. Uh… I… I don’t know what I mean…”

Sephiroth shook his head. “Do not worry about it. I simply don’t have much of a taste for one night encounters. I have tried that before but soon discovered that they are not for me. I have no wish to be another notch in someone’s bedpost.”

“Then… why did you… I mean, last night we…” Cloud trailed off, looking away. He could feel the telltale heat in his cheeks as he blushed darkly.

Sephiroth raised an eyebrow. “We were both rather drunk by that point… and I found myself unable to resist when you climbed into my lap the way you did.”

Cloud choked, unable to believe he had acted so brazenly. His blush darkened and he refused to meet Sephiroth’s eyes, which was probably a good thing because he missed Sephiroth’s teasing smirk.

“And then you were very eager to get your clothes off, even before we were out of the taxi…”

Cloud made a curious sound, somewhere between a choked sob and a whimper.

“Cloud?”

“I… I’m not… did I really… act like that..?” Cloud could not believe it, even if he had been drunk. It had taken him months just to let things progress beyond kissing whenever he began a new relationship. For him to suddenly act so …desperate while drunk was utterly humiliating. Sephiroth must have thought he was such a whore…

“I’m sorry, Cloud. I should not have bought you. I only sought to make you relax a bit in the club because you seemed nervous and uncomfortable,” Sephiroth explained, bowing his head slightly. “And… I also suspect I was not as gentle with you as I should have been…”

“Oh…” Completely surprised by that, Cloud forgot about how upset he was.

“I would like to make it up to you, if possible,” Sephiroth continued. “I have no wish to force anything on you but if you would like to go for coffee sometime..?”

Cloud blinked at him in surprise. This totally beautiful man was interested in him? It seemed too good to be true.

“If you would like to take some time to consider it, I will understand,” Sephiroth added, seeing the uncertainty in Cloud’s eyes.

“No! Uh… I’d love to go for coffee with you. It’s just… Are you sure?” Cloud could not help but ask. There were other things he wanted to say as well, like explain that he felt he was still getting over his previous relationship but… how often would he have the opportunity to go out with this man? Perhaps Zack had been right in that he simply needed to get out more instead of wallowing at home most of the time.

“I would not ask if I was not sure. When are you free next week?” Sephiroth smiled faintly across the breakfast table at Cloud.

“Uh… I have a half day on Wednesday…”

“Perfect. What time? I’ll take you to lunch. My treat.”

Cloud found it impossible to say no to those hypnotising green eyes. “…Class ends at twelve o’ clock. Um. Meet me at half past, outside the student dorm building?”

Sephiroth nodded, smirking victoriously, like the cat that got the cream. Cloud wondered about that look for only a moment before the taller man was leaning across the table to steal a kiss. Cloud froze up for a moment, not expecting the sudden move but… it was nice. Sephiroth kept it chaste, though he lingered for a few seconds before pulling away again.

“I will see you then. Now, finish your breakfast and if you like, I will give you a ride home when you are ready.”

“Alright. I have a paper due in tomorrow that I meant to spend last night working on so I probably shouldn’t stay too long.” Blushing yet happy, Cloud finished his pancakes, deliberately taking his time.

Sephiroth knew what he was doing and smirked at him as he finished his own breakfast.

They took their time over the rest of the morning, trading looks and sly touches until Sephiroth had to get dressed. In the car on the way back home, Cloud managed to call Zack and reassure him that everything was alright, that no, he wasn’t raped or kidnapped and yes, he was still with Sephiroth. Nor was he upset with Zack for disappearing. According to Zack, it had taken him a while to find Angeal and then he had been unable to find Sephiroth and Cloud again.

“I’m alright, Zack. Really. I’m almost home now. Sephiroth’s giving me a lift now,” Cloud said into the phone, glancing over at Sephiroth. “I’ll see you soon, alright? Bye.” He hung up and grinned slightly, blushing.

Sephiroth smirked, stopping the car just outside Cloud’s dorm building.

“Thanks,” Cloud said. “…Um…” He unfastened his seatbelt.

Sephiroth leaned over before Cloud could get out of the car and captured his lips in another kiss. “I shall see you on Wednesday, Cloud. Twelve thirty, right here.”

“…Yeah.” Blushing, Cloud finally climbed out of the car. Sephiroth gave him one last smile before driving off. Cloud watched him go, feeling positively giddy. He couldn’t wait for Wednesday!

…If he managed to survive the upcoming interrogation from Zack and his other friends first…
