HAPPY BIRTHDAY CATHEYXS!!!!!!!! (for whom I have a teeny pressie but it's not finished yet.)
Have been intrigued by the "what HP character am I like meme," but I have a sneaky feeling we are most of us either Remus or Hermione here in this LJ-world, with perhaps the occasional Luna or Tonks. In lieu of that, here's another silly and highly

Yes! Wonderful post.
The houses remind me of the old Soviet system, where kids were tracked at age 5 into various careers and assigned their fate in the world with no chance to vote otherwise. And I'm totally with you on the self-fulfilling prophecy.
I find the House system an interesting part of the Potterverse because it's not all positive by any means, and it has lasting effects on the students when they become adults. Your Dumbledore example illustrates this perfectly. His own knee jerk responses still hold even at *his* age.
Humans like to think in categories, and it's important to identify with one's peer group, but applying certain qualities in advance is a rather dangerous approach.
Amen, amen. And, um, shall I note what a Ravenclawlike response this was to my questions? *grins, ducks and runs*

Oh, by all means! I would have also sorted myself into Ravenclaw following Rowling's system *g*
Let's see: I have none of the Gryffindor traits, I am not brave (unless I've really, really got to, but then it's desperation rather than bravery) and I never, ever fall for challenges just for the sake of challenges. (No springing from a cliff for me!). I tend to think things through before I act and consider all possible outcomes in advance.
I could pass as a Slytherin, I assume, but I am not ambitious enough to scheme and trick to achieve my means.
I am definitely not hardworking. Nope. I'm not particularly loyal, either. I would't do anything for a friend and I don't stick up for my friends if what they are doing/saying/thinking is objectively stupid.
I am, however, rather well-read and I love discussing theoretical problems just for the sake of the discussion, but am indifferent enough to not care about the result of the discussion, i.e. I don't care whether my opinion will be proved right or wrong.
Ravenclaw, much?
