I mentioned this at the meeting to which my comment that I drink about 60-70oz of water a day was debated claimed upon that such things are "propoganda" by the water bottling company. The thing is, I heard about drinking a good amount of water from grade school health classes... but beyond that I take my personal reflections and advice from doctors into account.
I have arthritus, I've had it since I was a child and drinking water helps to lubricate joints and keeps me from getting the typical pain and inflamation I might get otherwise. (Doesn't mean it's a complete cure or prevention but it helps). I've found from personal experience that when I start to drink enough water (anything over 60oz) a day... after about the 4th day or so I start to feel less tired during the day as water helps with fatigue. I also don't feel thirsty as often and find I don't even need caffiene to wake up in the morning.
Most people suffer mildly from dehydration and water retention can also have partial cause to retaining weight.
Now the problem comes in that depending on which "propoganda" you follow will determine what answer you get for how much water you should drink.
The last medical journal I read on the subject said that the average sedatary person should consume 50% of their weight in ounces of water... however this includes water found in foods, drinks, and plain water consumption. Additional water should be added for active people (or when you sweat heavily) up to 75% of your weight consumed in water ounces.
The 8, 8oz glasses (64oz) of water a day is a basic estimate on the goal weight of the average american but should be adjusted based on your daily diet. It also doesn't have to be water persay but includes things like milk, juices, soups, etc. Keep in mind that salty drinks or sodas can negate this to a degree.
I drink about 60-70oz of water each day... it's actually quite easy to do if you cut out soda for water. It's about 3 bottled waters for 60oz plus whatever else you drink. I sip water almost constantly and usually can drink 60oz by the end of the workday (or at least by dinnertime).
You should NOT guzzle your water all in one sitting ESPECIALLY during mealtimes. It is better to not drink enough than to guzzle down your water all in one sitting. By drinking lots of water at mealtime (like an entire 20oz slugged down then a large meal) it can cause an upset stomach or indigestion... I think this is because it kinda dilutes your stomach acids until your body has time to compensate.
Downside to drinking lots of water--you pee a lot.
If you don't believe me, ask your doctor.
I for one believe that water bottling companies do spread horrible propoganda but you don't have to drink bottled water. I'm a huge fan of tap water... which is cheaper and just as regulated (perhaps moreso) than bottled water. I buy bottled water for convenience (because it's cold and easy to transport).
If you don't like the taste of water try Fruit2o, juice, milk, etc but then you have to worry about sugar/fat content.
Though, I betcha if you drink water constantly for a month you'll learn to drink it just fine. I now find that I occasionally crave plain ol water. :)
