3:30 a.m. The wood was dark, and the men in the railway carriage were cold and terribly exhausted. The door to the compartment slid open, and an old man in a civilian overcoat bowed slightly to the men inside.
“Meine Herren, Maréchal Foch has arrived.”
He stepped aside, and the well-groomed figure of the Maréchal appeared in the doorway.
“Thank you, Lyon, I believe that will be all.” He turned to the men in the compartment. “Is that not so, gentlemen?”
Lyon bowed again and headed down the corridor. Once out of earshot, he heaved an incredible sigh of relief.

Notes:
The armistice agreement between the Allies and Germany was signed shortly after 5:00 a.m. in a railway carriage in Compiègne Forest.
Ferdinand Foch was the commander of French forces as well as Commander-in-Chief of all Allied forces at the end of World War I. He made only two appearances at the armistice negotiations, at the beginning and at the end.
