Title: Series 6.1 Chapter 3/4
Author: Darkhorse_99
Rating: PG-13 for some language
Pairing: Connor/Abby, Emily/Matt
Warnings: None.
Spoilers: Nope, this is set in series 6 episode 1.
Beta'ing: Huge thank you to
fredbasset for beta'ing the early draft of this and encouraging me to post it. Also a huge thank you to
anonyme1 for giving it a run through. Any remaining mistakes are mine.
Summery: Six weeks after convergence the team struggles to adapt to the new reality of the whole world knowing about anomalies. All they managed to keep secret was Burton's New Dawn project, but now everyone has questions for the ARC.
Disclaimer: I don't have anything to do with Primeval or ITV except loving it from a distance.
AUTHORS NOTE:
Back around when series 5 aired, when rumors of the show being cancelled started to swirl, I got the sudden urge to do something just to see how it might look if it was continued into another series. So I did. Enjoy.
INT. CELLAR - INN - NIGHT
A tiny, knee-high anomaly is open, wavering, in the centre of the room filled with shelves and shelves of dry goods, spirits and food.
Doris leads the way stomping down the stairs, she flips lights on as she goes.
CONNOR
It looks stable! Stable-ish. Gah!
That time period reeks!
Connor flips the edge of his shirt up over his nose and points his dating calendar at it.
CONNOR
(muffled, through his shirt)
That's not right...
MATT
What?
CONNOR
It can't isolate a time period from
the atmosphere. The last time it
did that was the anomaly at the prison.
BECKER
And we all remember that one fondly.
Matt looks at him sharply, trying to decide if Becker is making a dig at him or just being sincere.
MATT
(to Connor)
So? Are there two?
CONNOR
Dunno. Hope not. I'll take an atmosphere sample.
He turns to run back upstairs to get his equipment and the anomaly starts making a destabilising, closing sound. Connor frantically looks around and sees a box of empty glass jars. He snatches one up and makes a scooping motion in front of the anomaly the instant before it closes.
MATT
(very sceptically)
Are you actually going to be able to
use a gas sample collected like that?
CONNOR
Dunno.
(he holds up his jar)
Better than nothing.
EXT. CAR PARK - INN - NIGHT
Matt is out by himself. He makes a phone call. The noise from inside has died down as people drift back to their homes and go to bed.
MATT
(On phone)
We've got to stay here tonight.
These little anomalies aren't
making sense. A dozen have flashed
in and out since dinner time.
INT. MATT AND EMILY’s FLAT - NIGHT
Emily leans on the counter. She watches TV from the kitchen whilst Taylor is sprawled out on the sofa, asleep.
EMILY
Be careful. Taylor's asleep on the
sofa. We had a good chat. I'll take
her over to Jess's in the morning.
EXT. CAR PARK - INN - NIGHT
MATT
Does Jess know that she's going
to have a house guest?
INT. MATT AND EMILY'S FLAT - NIGHT
EMILY
For your information, she's delighted.
She tries to hide it, but she misses
having someone there.
EXT. CAR PARK - INN - NIGHT
MATT
Yes... that’s an easy thing to get
used to. I’ve got to go back to
work. Good night Emily.
INT. MATT AND EMILY’S FLAT - NIGHT
EMILY
Good night.
Emily clicks the TV off and starts turning off lights. She walks over to Taylor and pulls the blanket up to her chin before heading to her bedroom.
INT. PARTY ROOM - INN - NIGHT
Becker and Abby sit and watch Connor work. Mat walks in and surveys the table.
Connor's glass jar is inside an improvised fume hood contraption that looks like Connor built it out of plastic bin bags.
CONNOR
I can't really isolate this as a
time period, high sulphur, high
CO2, it could be early Pranerozoic.
MATT
Any information we could actually use?
CONNOR
There's a lot of magnetic particles
in the air... and that is not
supposed to be like that. Nature
doesn't work that way.
MATT
Apparently nature disagrees with you.
CONNOR
There's a lot we don't know about
the really early time periods. This
could just be a new discovery.
(beat)
A really inconvenient new discovery.
ABBY
These anomalies are so weak this
could have happened before and we
just didn’t notice.
BECKER
That’s a scary thought. Oh well. At
least there’s no creatures.
EXT. CARPARK BEHIND INN - NIGHT
A tiny anomaly flickers to life and emits a hazy yellow gas.
Another one pops into existence a few yards away, it spits flecks of stone out onto the ground.
INT. INN - CELLAR - SAME TIME
Another little anomaly is near the floor, and another one by the ceiling.
All are emitting hazy yellowish smoke and tiny stones.
Then flecks of ash.
INT. PARTY ROOM - SAME TIME
The team sit around the table.
Doris comes in with fresh coffee for them, and to snoop.
The portable detectors go off and Connor turns to his laptop.
CONNOR
There’s five- nine- eighteen they're
multiplying! I don't know why, the
signal is getting stronger - I don't
think they're going to close on their own!
Becker looks over his shoulder to see where they are, and grabs the anomaly closer.
BECKER
I'll get the two outside first
before we start on the ones inside.
Becker runs out with two of his men behind him.
In the confusion, Doris ambles over and shamelessly reads over the atmosphere reports on the table. She's appalled by the findings.
DORIS
Why didn't you tell me about this?
We've got to get them closed! Now!
Matt yanks the papers away from her.
MATT
That's classified! What are you
doing in here anyway?Doris holds up the coffee pot in her defence.
DORIS
Don't you know what these gases are?
(beat)
They’re emitted just before a volcanic eruption! Lava!
An anomaly opens right in the centre of the table.
Yellow haze indicating sulphur wafts out.
Another one opens in the doorway, blocking it.
Connor jumps up and grabs his laptop before the anomaly in the table sucks it away.
All of them cluster on the far wall, cut off from escape.
CONNOR
I don't suppose I need to point out we're trapped.
INT. ARC - NIGHT
Jess watches the detector and listens to this revelation.
JESS
(on earpiece)
Becker! You have to get back inside
and close the anomaly in the doorway.
Lester comes out of his office to stand over her shoulder.
LESTER
What is it now?
JESS
They're all trapped inside, and somebody
said something about a volcano?
LESTER
Lovely - A volcano?
Jess types away on the keyboard, checks something.
Lester picks up an earpiece and pulls up a chair.
EXT. BEHIND THE INN - NIGHT
Becker kneels on the ground and sets up the device, one of his men keeps an EMD pointed at the tiny anomaly.
A few meters away another one has already been reduced to a shining ball of light.
BECKER
(on earpiece)
Just two seconds Jess,
I've almost got it - There!
INT. ARC - SAME TIME
Jess frantically reads something while Lester leans over her shoulder. Both of them look horrified.
JESS
(On earpiece)
I don't know if they've got two
seconds. Those gas mixtures are
consistent with pre-eruption emissions.
EXT. BEHIND THE INN - NIGHT
Becker gets the anomaly closer positioned and he fires.
A beam of electricity shoots out and flashes the anomaly into a tiny little ball, barely the size of a tennis ball.
Becker turns the machine off, jerks it up, runs back inside.
INT. PARTY ROOM - NIGHT
All of them are still clustered on the far wall.
The anomaly on the table and the one at the door are slowly widening.
A sudden burst of ash flies out of them both!
Coughing and gagging, the team drop to the ground in desperate search for good air.
MATT
(On earpiece)
We've got ash
(cough)
coming through!
INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE PARTYROOM - NIGHT
The air is choked with ash and fumes. Becker sets the device down and fumbles to power it up in the haze.
MATT (O.S)
Hurry up!
BECKER
(mutters)
Nag nag nag.
One of his men flicks a torch on to try and illuminate the controls.
INT. PARTY ROOM - NIGHT
Becker gets the anomaly in the doorway locked.
The trapped people scramble out on hands and knees, ducking under the locked anomaly floating in the doorway.
Connor still clutches his laptop.
Once the last of them is clear, Becker goes to re-aim the device at the anomaly on the table, and Doris grabs his arm.
DORIS
It's too late! You have to get out!
Becker ignores her and tries to get the anomaly closer to recharge and fire again.
Doris runs to the edge of the stairs and shouts up them whilst she pounds on the wall as hard as she can.
DORIS
FIRE! FIRE! FIRE! WAKE UP! YOU
HAVE TO GET OUT! FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!
Upstairs her guests yell and rush around in confusion.
INT. THE CELLAR - SAME TIME
The two soldiers in the cellar edge back quickly towards the stairs when the small anomalies they have been guarding expand, merging into a huge one.
A blast of burning ash nearly overtakes them as they bolt up the stairs.
They run for their lives!
INT. PARTY ROOM - NIGHT
The cellar anomaly shoots up through the floorboards to merge with the table anomaly.
When it does a huge explosion of ash flies out, flattens Becker and Doris and buries them in an instant!
Matt and Connor appear with towels wrapped around their faces to pull Becker and Doris out.
People half-dressed or in bathrobes run down the stairs, some carry children.
They cough and choke on the ash.
INT. MAIN DINING ROOM - NIGHT
Abby and the soldiers run up and help drag the semi-conscious pair to safety as well as ushering the last of the Inn's guests out the front door. Then Connor remembers something.
CONNOR
We need the closing device!
We only brought the one!
He turns and runs back into the ash and the fumes.
MATT
CONNOR! No! Damn it!
Matt follows him and finds him frozen just around the corner.
Bright red lava flows quickly through the giant anomaly. It melts the floor and the walls instantly catch on fire.
Matt grabs Connor’s arm and they both run for their lives.
EXT. INN CAR PARK - NIGHT
The soldiers back the trucks out and away from the danger.
One of them takes off down the road, honking frantically to wake people up downhill.
Seconds later there's a huge CRASH as the entire side of the inn collapses into fire and lava.
Matt, Connor, Abby and Becker stand between the car park and the road.
They watch the lava flow out of the building and head towards the next row of businesses, it engulfs everything.
MATT
Does anyone live that way?
He points down the road.
DORIS
Maybe! I don't know. Some people
might live above their shops.
Distracted, Doris counts heads to make sure all of her guests escaped.
A baby wails.
BECKER
(On his radio to his soldiers)
Bang on doors, make noise, do
whatever you have to do to get
everyone out downhill of the inn.
MATT
(on earpiece)
Jess...
INT. ARC - ANOMALY DETECTER - NIGHT
Jess is already routing emergency services towards them.
JESS
I'm on it. The fire service should
be there in ten minutes.
LESTER
I'll just go and tell the minister
that Wales has another natural
wonder for the tourists to gawk at.Lester stands up.
LESTER
I'm sure they always wanted a volcano.
Lester heads back to his office.
EXT. ON STREET OUSIDE RUINS OF WHITEHORSE INN - NIGHT
MATT
(on earpiece)
We need more equipment.
Everything was inside. Damn.
He runs up the road to join the others. The ashes are floating down like evil, gritty snow to cover them slowly.
Connor brushes some off himself and Abby before facing Doris.
CONNOR
How did you know that was going to happen?
DORIS
Because I'm a bloody geologist!
Behind her the last remnants of her family’s inn crash and melt into the lava.
