I posted this in response to a friend's inquiry about MySpace and Facebook, but it bears repeating here. I've been meaning to address this issue more formally, but since that doesn't seem to be happening, you get my stream of consciousness thoughts:
====
I have accounts on both Myspace and Facebook, (FB) but I rarely visit Myspace at all these days. I am a bit of a Facebook junkie, but the way I "use" that site is very different from how I used to interact with LJ.
I have a different set of friends on FB than I do on LJ. While there is a lot of overlap, I have many more 'friends' on FB, and I certainly don't feel like sharing with them some of the thoughts and feelings that I would post on LJ.
With my busy schedule I do find the short form updating of FB to be addictive. It's also a great way for me to stay in casual contact with the large numbers of colleagues that I have spread out all over the country and world.
I do miss writing more long-form, personal entries like I used to on LJ. I'm not quite sure what to do about that, especially if LJ goes away. It's funny, I joined LJ over 8 years ago, after stumbling across someone's journal while typing random combination of search terms into google. When I first joined, I didn't know anyone in 'real life' who was on LJ. I was in some ways a lot more open in what I wrote. I did develop a group 'friends,' but they were anonymous confessors for all intents and purposes. Over time a large percentage of my real life acquaintances joined LJ, and I had to change how I interacted with the site.
Ok, so that is a bit of a ramble. I guess I am just confused as to how to proceed. I've been posting bits of myself online for about a quarter of my life. I'm not looking to stop doing that anytime soon.
