Alright. I have one hell of a story to share with you all. Today in my Sociology 100 class we watched a video called Poletown Lives. We are studying Social Movements and this was our professors example
( Read more... )
Indeed, what happened in Poletown is an absolute tragedy and outrage, yet this sort of thing happens more often than most of us would like to admit. This is a perfect example of how corrupt the government can be/is. Most politicians are just ridiculous and dont give a damn about the people.
I know how much you love Georgie, but his (mis)administration is capable of some pretty fucked up shit as well. College has been the most eye-opening experience for me in the way of understanding how these United States really work. It almost makes me want to become a high school teacher (although I would never) because I have realized high school graduates are fucking ignorant as fuck when it comes to reality. I know I was, even with the help of drug use. These kids need someone to tell them the truth about the world, not sugar coat it and hide everything behind a bunch of bullshit creation vs. evolution, ten commandment controversy and lame fieldtrips to the goddamn renaissance festival. I would take my class to the Holocaust Museum and show them what their precious world can come to if we keep putting Texans in office.
I wish I could just get my BA, so that I could just say fuck America and go to Europe and pretend to be Canadian and teach people how to speak English. I used to despise the avant-garde expatriate circle bitching about their homeland, but now I am beginning to see how ridiculous Americans can be. My own country, right now, is telling the diabetics and quadriplegics they have no hope because we can’t research stem cells because “it’s taking a life”. This religious revival going on scares the shit out of me. I mean people actually seriously compared New Orleans to Sodom and Gomorrah-“God took care of those sinners because they were evil and debaucherous”. Maybe God just wanted the oil all to himself. I mean come on! Can people not accept the fact that shit just happens? Americanized Christianity is truly no better than Islamic-extremism. There is no difference I can see other than the method of violence and whose god is angrier. They use car bombs, we use tactical weapons. Religion has been the underlying cause of almost every war, and this one is no different except for the oil. For the first time in history, it has been said that our parents and their generation as a whole actually think we (their children) will fair worse in the grand scheme of living a successful life than they did. For the first time, there is actually less hope for the future. If the American Empire should collapse, I don’t think I want to be surrounded by oil-crazed Christian zealots because it will get ugly. I think Europe knows enough about economic depression to keep themselves above water, via their public transportation system. Don’t get the wrong impression. I really do love America. Jefferson and the other fathers must have done something right because overall the democratic foundations of the US have lasted for a long time. But unless Americans get over their isolationism, and get their act together by turning off their fucking televisions and reading and studying literature other than the Bible, this country is going to be in a world of hurt. America has fucked up a lot, but until the last 40 years we’ve learned from our mistakes. I don’t think protest songs have the power anymore to change anything. I don’t think the people have the power to change anything because we are so divided. I really don’t know how our generation will handle things when all the dinosaurs are out of the Whitehouse, but I hope its better than this.
And, even more outrageous than the mess we're in is whats going on in Africa, more specifically Darfur. Have you heard about any of this? America is turning a blind eye to it. It disgusts me that the media cares more about what Jessica Simpson has to say than fucking GENOCIDE.
Seriously if you haven't heard about Darfur, please, check this out and spread the word. I feel so utterly helpless.
Wow, this really turned into a giant giant response, lol. Dont explode! I'm not attacking you at all, just sharing some info that I've learned and been changed by. Even if you disagree with my beliefs on America, please at least check out the Darfur site.
Yes, I understand your feelings of displease towards our government. I am a republican and for the most part (not all mind you) I support what our President George W. Bush is doing. Although some of the reasons we went into Iraq are questionable I believe the liberation of women and children in that area of the world is worth it not to mention capturing Sadaam Husein. In that regard, I dont think it is fair to put Bush Jr. on the same level as Hitler.
As far as Darfur, yes I agree it is absolutely terrible. I myself over the past 6 mnths was wondering why our government wasnt doing anything. I dont know if you knew this, but our government along with the UK are actually going in and helping the refugees of Darfur. We as a country couldnt go in sooner due to the level of danger involved. I believe about 2 mnths or so ago Condi Rice went there and held meetings with the officials there in Darfur, so although we may not hear it like we should...i do believe progress is being made.
