Ignorance is Bliss

Lately I've had an issue with my left foot swelling up a fair bit by the end of every day. Once I realized it wasn't going to go away, I decided to go see the doctor. Turns out that it could be either of two things: poor circulation due to my weight, and water retention. I'm just happy he ruled out renal failure and heart disease, the other likely causes. He put me on a diuretic for the latter, which means having to go to the bathroom a LOT more than normal, but that's only for a month.

The bigger news, though, was that he told me that while I'll probably see 40 with no issues, if I wanted to see 50, I needed to lose at least a hundred pounds. (Yeah, Michigan folks, I've gained a little weight.) So, effective Thurdsay, I've had to start watching what I eat and cut my soda intake completely. I did a little reading, though, and just cutting soda will take 400-600 calories a day out of my diet. I hadn't realized just how much those things had! Taking that into account, I actually don't need to lower the rest of my eating too incredibly much to start unless I want to send my system into shock, but now I get to teach myself to eat better.

Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

On the bright side, since I was drinking Pepsi rather than Mountain Dew, the caffeine withdrawal was minor: a slight headache Friday, a minor headache the first half of Saturday, and then I was done. Much better than the three days of hell I went through when I stopped cold turkey on Mountain Dew back when I was unemployed! Now I'll just keep my fingers crossed that the weight loss will go as smoothly.
