Preparing and Adventuring

So... I've been slightly busy lately. Not so much during the week, because I spent most of that time lying around getting nothing done and spending a lot of time on Cracked and TV Tropes, but this weekend has kept me on my toes. Well, Monday and Tuesday were also a bit exciting because on Monday I went rafting for the first time and on Tuesday I got a new computer. Rafting was tons of fun, much wetter than I expected (perhaps because I wound up in the front of the boat and got soaked every time we hit rapids), and the weather was absolutely perfect- not too hot for the still stretches, but warm enough to dry you off after you got drenched going down the rapids. Luckily, no one in our boat followed my mom's previous example of flying out of the boat, though my sister did lose her paddle at one point and I flew backwards into my dad's lap and nearly hit my sister in the face with my paddle. I did get a little sunburned, but only in strange, random patches on my arms and one of my feet, because apparently I was diligent enough about reapplying sunscreen everywhere else.

I am so excited about my new computer! My old one still works, and is going to my sister since hers broke a while ago, but I wanted something lighter and more portable to carry around school. Something without a giant lumpy battery and widescreen display. My sister is just excited she'll have a proper webcam again. The new laptop has a 14" screen and is smaller without being unbearably tiny like my dad's netbook. It's another HP, and has been working pretty well so far (except for the ridiculous windows updates that try to shut down your computer to install if you don't delay the update, but that's not unexpected). I discovered a new reason to love Windows 7- it's called Easy Transfer. I was able to transfer all my files, down to the tabs I currently had open in Firefox, without more hassle than a couple hours' wait. I did have to re-download iTunes (though my library transferred over), GIMP, and lost a few fonts I'd got off the web, but it was much better than computer transitions I've had in the past.

Yesterday, a good deal of my extended family came over to see the Saturday performance of Roman Romanni's and give me a belated graduation party, as they hadn't all been able to make it to my actual graduation. None of my presents were as incredibly useful as the Kindle I got last time, but they were very nice and I appreciated the money that came with them. One was an apparently expensive necklace. I'm just glad I didn't get any more perfume-scented secondhand old lady hats from my grandpa's girlfriend. We barbecued and it was delicious, though I did wish people had decided to sit inside instead of out back in the 90 degree heat and limited shade.

Today, we went to Bed, Bath, and Beyond because my mom had a coupon that expired tomorrow. We later found out that the store doesn't care about expiration dates, but oh well. It was quite useful- they had an entire section at the front of the store devoted to things college students might want for their dorm rooms. I got a rug, a lamp, various storage things, and, due to the limited colors they had available for everything (green, purple, black), it appears that I am going to have an ongoing theme of green. Which is cool, I like green and there are dark green-ish bits in the bedding set my grandma brought up. Also, she brought up a minifridge, which will be appreciated. I move into the dorms in less than a month and now that I have a good deal of my supplies, it's starting to seem very real.

(Additionally, I am desperately hoping to go on the Magic Quill quest for Pottermore early access. I missed Day 1, so I suppose it's a matter of waiting and randomly refreshing to see when they open it up for Day 2...)
