Wicked and a Baby

I had a pretty awesome day today. We went down to San Francisco to see Wicked. The tickets were a Christmas present from our grandpa because we'd wanted to see the show in New York but had been unable to because it was sold out. Well, it was a very good Christmas present because the show was amazing. The weather was a little rainy and unpleasant, but the theatre was awesome. It looked like a cross between an old church and a castle. The set was also fantastic. It seemed very steampunk, with gears everywhere, and some really creative things done with it. Lights along the side and top of the set was one of those things, and there was a giant dragon mounted on the top. Its eyes lit up red and it moved around during really dramatic moments of the play. The costumes were also great, really detailed, slightly fantastical, and the chorus members had enough differentiation among their costumes that they didn't all blend together but didn't overshadow the leads either. Everyone could sing really well and Glinda's voice wasn't as annoying as I initially thought it would be. It was pretty awesome seeing songs I'd only heard brought to life on the stage, even though I only knew a couple of the songs.

The story was great, too. I especially loved the second act, when the whole story of Wizard of Oz was worked into the existing plot, casting everything from a new perspective. I enjoyed watching it all work out. Elphaba and Glinda reminded everyone in our family of me and my sister, respectively. Glinda was hilarious and I loved how potentially really dramatic situations had some comedic moments in them. The ending was great, too. I thought it was going to be really tragic and sad, but it turned out just perfectly. Ha, the scarecrow was always my favorite character...

Afterward, we went to visit my aunt and one-month-old cousin, Tiana (no relation to the Disney princess). Tiana was sick and not in a very good mood, but she was absolutely adorable and still so small. We all took turns holding her and talking and hanging around. She was even more adorable once she stopped crying. It was nice to visit, since my aunt hadn't come up for Christmas. Overall, it was a pretty good day.

Oh, I also finished the fourth book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, which I only started yesterday... Only one more to go now, how sad. I wish they were longer like the Harry Potter books.
