Theta, all things considered, can occasionally be a very fast learner.
He learns very quickly that panicking when he realizes hat he isn't home only brings bad things. He learns that it brings needles and people he doesn't know who wear false faces and slip on soothing voices that don't ever fit quite right.
He learns that you can leave your room if you're good, though he's never quite sure what that is here. No one acts the same way and if they do, it's not acting at all, it's not living, at least not the way he remembers it.
He learns that smiling faces don't always mean good things and that you always know what to expect from a quiet person.
That's why he sits next to him, why he closes his eyes and enjoys the man's silence. There's something to him, something that's not-quite-familiar and it's in the way he says so little.
Theta likes it though and it's the firs thing he ever says to William.
--
Everything burns when he walks and the lights are too bright but neither of these things matter.
Liam's room is close, he reminds himself and he counts the doors until he gets to the right number. It's safer in here, not by much, almost not at all, but he likes to pretend otherwise.
The Doctor isn't here, the Doctor can't see him if he's in here, curled up on the other's bed under blankets and not moving. If he's sill enough and Liam can keep a secret, everything will be all right.
--
He doesn't like not seeing him.
It's silly and he knows that one day, when he's gone, he's probably never going to see him again but for now? While he's still here and there's no Koschei, no TARDIS, no nothing that makes him think he's home, he wants to be near William, even if it's only for a little while at a time.
It's why he walks, even though his legs shake, why he slips inside, though he Doctor's in there too, and why he settles on the floor, eyes closed as he listens to them.
It's not peaceful, it's not home, it's not anything he misses so dearly it hurts, but it's something.
--
There's something going on.
It's not hard to tell, the hospital is tense, so tense and he can breath in worries that he doesn't understand. People are more careful, more aware and he hasn't seen Liam.
This? This is troubling.
It's even more troubling when he peeks in the door and sees him on the bed, sees people around him and the Doctor talking and everything is wrong because it looks like they're draining the life out of him.
Theta's stomach flips but he sits outside the door and waits until he knows he'll be able to go inside.
--
All he wanted was to go home. he wanted to go with Koschei, go sit in the console room, have tea, wear his own clothes and listen to the TARDIS as she sings.
Now that he can though? He almost feels guilty for wanting it so much.
He tells Koschei he can't leave yet, that he needs to say goodbye.
When he takes the walk to Liam's room and curls up on the bed as is his custom, he doesn't quite manage the right words.
'Goodbye' turns into 'You should come home with me'.
