Description: Jongin can’t sleep. Not when the noises in the night all sound like him.
Click... Click... Click...
The wheel of the broken box fan turns. The air between Jongin and the fan moves at a lethargic pace. The temperature is still stifling; along with the darkness. It is still difficult to breathe. His heavy breaths echo in his ears. In. Out. Jongin still can't force his eyes to close. His mind still lingers in the expanse of long lost faded memories, looking for answers to the questions he never asked.
Click... Click... Click...
The pen tip touches the fine sheet of paper. The deep blue ink runs smoothly against the page, creating a path that is uncomfortably familiar to Jongin, his own name. The light emitting from the desk lamp is dim, making Jongin feel even heavier. Jongin tells himself that he should at least try to be productive if he can't sleep; a sad excuse that no one else could ever believe. The night continues to taunt him. He flips to the next page and signs it with a long drawn out sigh. Each page gets harder and harder and the applied pressure of the pen tip creates a deeper crevasse on each page. Soon the resistance is too much and the ink clogs and explodes on the last page. The splatter on the page ruins the pristine formality of the sheet. He wants to scrunch it all up and start over, but he knows he can't. From the beginning, Jongin knew he had one chance and one chance only, and he blew it.
Click... Click... Click...
The second hand of the clock drones in the night. Jongin lies flat on his back staring at the bleak ceiling yet again. His mind is still rushing and spinning at a hundred miles an hour. His hand stretches out to his left, feeling the cold empty space next to him.
"Jongin-ah."
The movement of air from the fan whispers to him. A burning feeling, that Jongin can't suppress, rises. He thrashes about in the sheets like a fish out of water. The noises are too much. He can't make them stop. After an eternity, he collapses from exhaustion. His eyes are finally obeying his will as he lets them droop to a close before his heart comes pouring out from them.
"Forgive me Kyungsoo-ah. I couldn't save you. Forgive me." Jongin mutters.
Click... Click... Click...
The noises in the night will keep you stuck in limbo. The noises in the night will taunt you. The noises in the night will pass down judgment upon you. The noises in the night will make sure you never forget.
