Mugglenet Book Signing Write Up

Jun 08, 2007 11:25

So here it is folks...

Last night I went to the book signing for the "Mugglenet's What Will Happen in Book 7?" with Ben Schoen and Emerson Spartz. I went with Rory and we met up with Mugglenet Greg. For those of you that don't know, Mugglenet Greg designed the web layouts for the MuggleCast page and the Pickle Pack website (but he did not design the Pickle). You can find him at xalerstudios.com for all of your layout design needs. (He's a lot cheaper than some of the other design people out there too so check him out!) Squib Girl showed up and Rory had a total Fan Girl moment by squeeing "Melinda!" rather loudly and getting a lot of weird looks from the non-hardcore / (obviously) non-wizard rock fans in the crowd. 'Cause let's face it, everyone in the WRock community at least recognizes the name "Squib Girl" I also got to meet Paige who is all the way from Birmingham Alabama. When she friended me on Myspace I got into contact with her 'cause that's where my roomy Alyssa was from. And we've been talkin' ever since! Moving on to the event:

The event was supposed to start at six but the boys were a bit late in coming on and it ended up starting round 6:15ish not too bad really. There was a speaker blocking my view of Emerson's top half the entire time which was a bit annoying but I was able to see him on the screen of my camera. I took video of their entire talk, which brought out quite a few laughs from the crowd. You could tell Emerson was trying to be his usual assy self but toning it down for the kids, and Ben was very professional. I used to not like Ben as much, but after last night I think I'd perfer him over Emerson. Back to the Book Talk! They spoke about several things in their book including Harry live or die? Snape good or evil? And the Harry is a horcrux theory. I would have liked for them to talk about RAB because I had a question/half formed theory thingy about it which I talked about on the video podcast Rory, Mugglenet Greg and I recorded.

The Question and Answer portion was a little frustrating. Some of the questions people asked were very "misinformed". People were asking questions that had Greg beating his head with his (first edition) copy of "Mugglenet What Will Happen in Book 7?" You could tell that the majority of the people there were just casual mugglenet fans. There was a hardcore pickle packer siting in the front row though. (She hadn't received her shirt yet either... c'mon Andrew, WTF?) Some of the questions were thing that they've answered on MuggleCast, and I think one of the questions had both Greg and I groaning it was that "misinformed." I feel bad for these people. They need to be a bit more hardcore...haha. When Rory asked her question Ben interupted her to say, "Greg, is that you?" (or something like that, I'll have to watch the video) and then Greg got a quick plug which was pretty exciting). And when they made a call for one last question and Greg raised his hand Ben and Emerson were looking around and Rory, Squib Girl, Paige and I all started calling out "Mugglenet Greg! Pick Greg!" They did a crap job of answering his question. At the end of the Q & A session they were unable to pass out prizes (the Alivans box didn't arrive in time apparently) So when they asked who had come the furthest it came down to two people. A lady from North Carolina and Paige from Alabama. The lady from NC was convinced that she had come further... Hello Alabama is further south! So as a prize Paige and her party (us) got to jump to the head of the line. After they were done talking Emerson came over to us and was talking with Greg for a bit and signed his book while he was at it, but Greg still came to the line with us because he needed Ben's signature too. It was all very exciting. Emerson said something along the lines of "Why didn't you e-mail us and tell us you were coming?" to which Greg said, "I didn't know about it until Ashley told me," he pointed at me and I just smiled smugly as Emerson gave me a funny look.

So we pissed off quite a few people I imagine because first off we got to jump to the front of the line, and second of all 'cause we talked with them for at least 10 minutes. Rory gave Ben her phone number and told them to call her or something if they wanted to hang out afterwards. We stuck around till they were done with the line and then helped them sign the store copies of the book. Rory held the books open between Ben and Emerson and I took the finished copies and stuck them in a basket. Then the employees took over (boo...if it had been wizard rockers instead of B and E then we would have been allowed to help...I blame The Man). But Greg got a picture of us helping so it's all good. When they were done Ben was asking Rory and I what all there was to do in Canton, Ohio...we told him the same thing Greg had. Not much... Ben seemed pretty eager to hang out, but Emerson was being a bit of a drag. (BTW Ben is pretty tall, I was a little surprised).

The drive back to Rory's house was spent texting Ben and blasting the Moaning Mrytles and signing along. Rory and I make a good team, we're going to record ourselves singing The Remus Lupins' "Remember Cedric" 'cause we totally kick ass on that song...  So Paige, Rory and I hung out at the House of Awesome for a while, then Greg came over after his (awkward) date. Paige left a little before 11 and around 11 Rory, Mugglenet Greg and I recorded a video podcast. It was pretty interesting. It started off strong but by the end we were rambling about a bunch of random crap. Next time I'm over at Rory's we're going to edit the video and I'll post it via the Podcast of Awesome server. All in all it was a great night and Greg made a new friend in Rory...he might be coming with us to Wilmington now which is pretty darn awesome and after a little bit of pestering Rory has agreed to let me run her merch table. It will probably be a combined effort because I hope to have stickers (and maybe buttons?) by then for the show. (note to self, talk to Kelly...)

Over all it was a pretty good night. We inducted Mugglenet Greg into the world of Wizard Rock, and Kelly would be proud to know that both Rory and Greg agree: Oliver Boyd and the Rememberalls is like "liquid sex"

Live, Laugh, Love,
~Ashley

P.S. I'll post pictures from the event in the near future.
