Pennsic Blues

Mar 25, 2008 08:34

As many of you know, Pennsic seems to be looming just around the corner. From what I have heard it is an experiance of a lifetime, and anybody in the SCA tries to go there at least once in the SCA life.

After the official invite by their Majesties at BIA, which I trully believe was deserved, Things in the rapier community started to shift. There is major planning that has started up in regards to this trip, but I feel the sense of Peer Presure to go there. it is not to say that I wouldn't want to go there, nor that I am not aprreciative of the opportunity offered to me, But I am still hesitant of going. With all these new personal expenses that are slowly but surely creeping up on me, it is more difficult for me to be able to make more trips than I have in previous years, for I know that If i take an extra one now, I may not be able to do any next year, and will just be playing catch up.

Many would ask, why do I not give up one trip so that I can Go to Pennsic in its place if that is the way you feel, and although the idea has merrit I do not believe I can.

One of my trips is Anime North, and I do not go just for the idea of anime, but for the fact that it is a trip that I do with friends from college, who up until recently, I rarely ever saw and this happened to be the only thing that all of our scheduals allowed so that we may meet up.

The other trip happens to be GNEW, and although not as big as Pennsic it happens to be our Barony verses basically everyone else. I know that I would defenitly have to be there not only because I have done this for a few years, that I want to support our barony, but if it wasnt for this event in the past we wouldn't have the recognition that we have today, and I am a firm believer of no matter haw far and how fast we ave grown better, we can not ignore the path that got us here.

This doesn't mean that if something miraculous happens in my life that I would ignore the chance to go, nor does this mean that I would not like to help, and if people are willing to hear my opinions on some of the decision for the Pennsic trip I would like to still be aloud to help.

On a completly other note, although Mia has basically given a few details on my doings in the SCA, i believe that details are better heard from the horses mouth.

I have recently become interested in archery again, after what seems to be a 2 year hiatus, I have recently been showing up to practises more often, and under some supervision and a bit of tutelage from Jason, I am striving to get bac into form. On that note, I have been in search in the recent weeks for a horsebow, not for the sake of it being pretty and powerful, but i am also looking for something that works well with my persona, since I believe that at some point in time you must start getting into a more persona oriented mindset in the sca or you will always consider yourself a mook in funny clothing that talk stranger than a sluring drunk Irishman speaking french.

On that note, I have decided whatI would like my arms to look like, whether it passes or not depends on the input from our local herald, but in any case I have the idea in my head and i the next few days, I will most likely attemt to draw it out on paper and then on the eschutchen, so that it may be ready for the next event that it would be needed. For those of you who don't know what it looks like, it is essentially a bull with three dice over over its head, one on each side and one directly on top.

Speaking of dice, I have been doing a large amount of research on gambling in the middle ages, and after the success of my betting table during fall harvest I was inspired to continue on with this endeavour to entertain and involve the general population during events, because although watching a tournement may be fun to some people, other seem to get bored when they have nothing to do. It is for this reason that I have decided to do the research on period games, not only for entertainment, but it is a simple way to raise mony for a specific function in our local group. The thing that I ask of all of you is, when it is established, since I am only doing this for sheer fun and amusement, or for you crass people out there Shits and Giggles, and not raising money for myself at all unless it is for me to get better equipment to improve these games.

If people take up my services as a fundraiser, I will request that people from said faction of activities, send a few of their members to me to help me run these games, I am offering the service and eventually might try to recruit some people so that I may have a team with me to help run one ore more of these, but we will not be at the event just to work, for we would like to roam around and revel with everyone else as well, so I will be requesting volunteers to help replace us. This I believe will not only help raise money, but involve and encourage people who arent doing the martial activities of that event to show up anyways and get involved (ie. the archer Corp).

The only thing left to say, is that I am commencing my studying for my marshallet soon, so that we can have one more marshal in the rapier group, in case none of the marshals, which happen to be at least 75% of the fencers don't show up, i can still teach the newcommers that seem to be coming in lately.

Enjoy your regularly schedualed work day, and feel free to comment, criticise or object any and all comment made on this post, I want to hear everyone's opinions. And you all have the right to distribut this post to those out there that I might know in real life but do not have me on their LJ as a friend.
