Is anyone else watching Channel X? I picked it up because it sounded right up my alley -- a squeaky-clean newscaster is accused of killing his fiancee, and the only person who can help him clear his name is his real OTP, a cynical tabloid photographer.
But then I watched the first two eps and I realized the synopsis was only half right. Instead of a straightforward whodunnit, it's actually a twisty conspiracy mystery! Filled with death! Death and doom!
Also, the promo pic conveniently leaves out stuff like this:
WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN A SELLING POINT FOR MOST OF US.
This is JOE CHENG An. He's a nice guy and honest newscaster who is madly in love with his fiancee, blah blah blah. To be honest, his character isn't that interesting except for the fact he's JOE CHENG, MY BABY DADDY AND LOVE ETERNAL smoking hot.
DID I MENTION HE HAS SEX ON KITCHEN COUNTERS.
That's just how Joe Cheng rolls.
This is his REAL OTP, Xiao Lu. Despite a lack of kitchen sex, she is awesome.
She's cynical, stubborn, rude, relentless, and mean. She sees her work -- skeevy tabloid reporting -- as exposing liars and hypocrites, so she has absolutely no qualms about taking paparazzi photos or even framing people for the big scoop. She sneaks into corporate buildings and sets off smoke bombs just to get reaction shocks. She has an entire arsenal of costumes and fake IDs to gain access anywhere.
IF IT ISN'T OBVIOUS, I LOVE HER LOTS. I get tired of heroines who are all about sunshine and rainbows and never ever hurting people's feelings. Xiao Lu will insult you to your face.
Their first meeting goes like this: he's chasing her down the hall (after the smoke bomb) and catches her in the elevator. She twists out of his grip with some kung-fu shit that leaves him stunned as the doors close.
IS THAT NOT SO FUCKING COOL. YOU WERE IMPRESSED, DON'T LIE.
And the whole "false murder plot" thing? Well, she knows he didn't do it... because she was with him at the time, framing him for something else. LOLOLOL.
Here's where it gets strange. See, the synopsis makes it sound like the whole plot is about his fiancee's murder. And the opening scene is An running through the rain, panicked and crying, the media excitedly reporting about his terrible murder...
But the victim is Xiao Lu.
So we're actually watching a flashback drama. Somewhere along the line, An falls in love with the woman helping him investigate his fiancee's murder... only for her to die too. The synopsis, while technically correct, was only scratching the surface of a much bigger story about An getting caught in something huge. WHAT THE HELL IS IT? I DON'T KNOW, BUT I LOVE CONSPIRACY DRAMAS. BRING IT ON.
Oh, the foreshadowing!
