God, that pissed me off too. What about honouring his commitment to his teammates, rather than leaving them a man down at the end of the game? Not to mention the fact that my own family's values don't include resorting to violence just because somebody calls you names.
I think I posted about this a little while ago, but my team had a game where the other team were being assholes, trash-talking and fouling us (and the referee wasn't calling most of it). We'd already had one player red-carded for mouthing off to the ref, when another guy got a yellow card for doing the same thing. We sent him over to the sidelines to cool off, and he was standing there with me and one of the other girls on the team, when one of the guys from the other team made a crack about women, and our guy just lost it -- went over to them, started yelling (although, no head-butting).
And what happens? He gets another yellow card, and the referee decides to abandon the game. So as much as he might have thought he was defending our honour or whatever (and thanks, but no thanks, because I can take care of myself on the pitch), all that happened was that the rest of the team was punished by not getting any points from the game.
Anyway, my point is that it's just stupid. And yeah, I would stay away from football news for the next month if possible, because it's all just going to be pointless rumours about who might be getting traded where. Bah.

He wasn't the only one on that team playing in his last hurrah, besides which, he was the captain. What about the honour of acting with dignity when you're wearing your country's shirt? What about the passion for the game, of showing Materazzi what's what by playing well and kicking his ass fair and square? Argh. The whole thing aggravates me. That incident you describe is a perfect exemplar.
Yeah. I think I definitely need to avoid the Guardian's football section, anyway. I was already pissed off over that retarded MBM report that talked about how "all the players must have gotten together before the game and agreed not to act like women" because the diving was at a minimum. Like, when did they hire Thierry Henry?
