Thus far, since the start of Passover I have been keeping kosher. It's harder than I thought it would be. I'm also sticking to the unleavened bread and such as well. I'm not sure why I'm doing this. While I have chosen to identify as Jewish, I've never kept kosher except inside of my grandmother's (well, step-grandmother technically) house out of respect for her keeping a kosher household. However, even when up in NY, they didn't mind me not eating kosher when we went out and probably would have let me not keep kosher within the house, but I did it out of respect. I remember, while assisting those sitting shiva and somewhat doing so myself after she passed, my grandfather was not keeping kosher and was wanting to eat pork in the house during that time of mourning for his wife. Anyway, thus far I have managed to keep kosher. I hope to do so for the remainder of Passover, at least while in the house. It's strange checking for the K on items but I'm doing it. Perhaps I shall become more observant over time, I really don't know.
I have decided that I wish to get a Hebrew name. My sister was given one, but by the time I was born my parents had chosen to raise me Catholic. So, this is something for me to look into in the future.
I will not keep a kosher household year-round as it's not my thing and I'm a VERY reformed Jew. Still, it's interesting that I've gone that way this year.
Anyone know about the process of my obtaining a Hebrew name? I know I do not need to convert as I was born Jewish according to both the Catholic and Jewish faiths by virtue of my Jewish mother.
So, if this week you want to have some pork or shellfish or even a cheeseburger, it's not going to be at my house.
