I don't actually come from Toronto. I was born in a suburb a few miles away. But I never really considered that place a home, and Toronto got ten years of my life so I can claim I'm a native Torontonian without too many people objecting. When tourists come here they say things like "everyone's so nice" and "it's really clean". And if you stick to the touristy areas then yeah, it's going to be. You can go down to the harbour and watch all the ritzy people with their yachts. You can taste the nightlife and climb the CN tower. If you stay away from the Jane-Finch Corridor, you probably won't get shot.
The landmarks I remember aren't that impressive though. There's a great hot-dog stand by the Manulife Building that sells at a looney a dog. There's a church shelter down at St. Michaels that actually washes their bedding. There's a diner in Chinatown that serves omlettes the size of your head. And there's the apartment I shared with Henry for five years.
Then I moved to Vancouver, which I will probably never fit into because I a) don't ski or snowboard and b) am not vegetarian. But I do work in television now which I guess gives me a partial in.
I'm not gonna call myself a Vancouverite though. That just sounds stupid.
