You may as well count all of the time, unless the separation spanned a significant number of months. Now, do I need to spout the usual nonsense about the merit of the gift is in the spirit of the giving, or are you trying to avoid giving him something hideous?

Well it was one month. And a bit. Kind of.

And I got him something but I don't know if I should give that to him or go with something less embarrassing less terrifying less shmoopy else.

That hardly seems worth agonizing over.

Such as? You're being supremely unhelpful, Tony.

But I want to get it right.

And I don't know if I should say. It's going to sound ridiculous.

Well I won't know if it is ridiculous until you tell me, will I?

That's the whole point. See, last year at Christmas he got me a ring. So at Valentine's Day I got him a different kind of ring that we're not gonna talk about and I thought maybe...uh...that I should get him one that matched the one he gave me.

I presume you mean one for his finger.

Yeah. I know, it's cheesy. Too cheesy. Are motorcycle parts better? I could get those too.

I've no idea what motorcycle parts are, though I presume they have something to do with transportation.

If you're truly committed to this relationship ... it truly is the meaning behind the gift that matters most.

Yeah but I'm not sure what I mean yet. I mean, I'm sure what I mean, I'm just not sure what the gift means.

...That came out a lot clearer in my head.

I imagine it did, but as I've no intent to have a look inside of your head, we'll make do with what's already on the network. The ring clearly evokes a shared history. What is the significance of the motorcycle?

He rides them. They're his other love. Although he keeps them pretty in-tune and I wouldn't know which part to get.

Have you ever considered a compromise? Getting him both? It's simple, I know, but sometimes you have to do what makes sense.

...Which should I give first?

Darling, I'm not the one sleeping with the man. How should I know?

Guess.
