I rewatched the entire series in the past few days while killing times on planes and at airports X3....

LJ-cut because of spoilers inside and a lot of typing. Be warned.

Yeah, I think Mao is definitely gone if one accepts the events in the last episode. ALl the other people in the group who met Hei in the pocket-verse were dead contractors, although Huang was in there too for some reason.

The reason I thought it was suggested it might be Li or someone working with him is because all of these things in the end were occurring in the same area. We cut from Misaki chasing someone who looks like Li from the back (and why would she get it wrong of all times, now when she has been right every toher time), to her losing him, to the appearance of the Mao-like cat being picked up by someone, to the immediate cut to Yin's spectral form. (And oddly enough Yin isn't just a blob spectre, but a complete outline.)

It could be random, but the setup doesn't feel that way. Mao's final words are quite interesting -- and almost compel you to think that Hei and Yin would go looking for him.

"If... by chance a cat that looks just like me comes to you someday... then..."

Although based on the red-shirt it would be pretty funny if it were Gai picking up that poor cat.
