Peter had slept through Deirdre's 20th birthday. He hated that he hadn't been there for her since he knew how much he meant to Deirdre, but it hurt a hell of a lot more that he had been asleep for Rasputina's first birthday. His tiny daughter had turned one and he had slept right through it. Peter was thankful that Svetlana wasn't angry. Thankful that Thomas had done everything in his power to make the day a happy one for them both, to make up for Peter's absence. But it didn't make up for it in Peter's heart. He was probably going to feel guilty for that for the rest of his life. Which he was now realising might just be longer than 5 years. That, however, was a good thought.
And even bad thoughts were silenced when there were babies to cuddle. Aly brought a sleeping baby Thomas to Peter, who promptly wrapped his arms around the small boy and he kissed his cheek. "He looks like such an angel when he's asleep." Peter commented.
"Misleading, hmm?" Aly laughed and then she kissed Peter's hair. She was slightly worried when he winced slightly and pulled away. "Peter?"
"Sorry, I...my hair hurts. When it moves."
Aly raised her eyebrows, but she knew it was probably thanks to the chemo. Poor Peter. "Then I promise I won't give you a noogie."
"Oh dear god, I'll scream. I had dreams that the Templar were torturous hair pullers..."
"Peter, maybe you should just shave your head." Aly pointed at her still very short hair, thanks to Amaris and Brian's treatment. "It's not the end of the world. And it grows back."
"I dunno...I just want it for as long as I can have it. Which is stupid and vain, but I like my hair, no matter how weird and flingy it is. Even if it hurts."
"You realise you're a woman, right?" Aly asked, amused.
"Oh, the Littletons have made that clear enough to me." Peter ran his fingers through Thomas's hair, since he had to leave his own alone. "I missed Rasputina's birthday."
"I know, Honey."
"And I want to be better before Lauren's. I don't want to miss hers."
"I know you'll do everything in your power to make it so you don't." Aly kissed Peter again, this time on the forehead. "And so does everyone else. We spoiled Rasputina rotten for her birthday, and while she missed her daddy, she knows you love her."
"I miss her because she doesn't live here."
"Oh, Peter. How about I invite Svetlana round for dinner and we can have another birthday party for Rasputina."
Peter lit up and he looked at his wife. "You know you're the best wife ever, right?"
"I might have an inkling." Aly winked and then she planted a kiss on Thomas' head before heading to the phone. Peter seemed okay. It was keeping her calm. She only hoped he would stay that way until this was all over.
