On Thursday, I manage to interrupt my trip home from work with a collision with a white Toyota Matrix on a highway heading south from downtown. It was 5 o'clock traffic, slow and thick. Stop and go every few seconds it seemed. Suddenly, in the middle of a go, a black truck stopped. The Matrix swerved to the left to avoid the truck. Unfortunately we were in the left most inner lane with only a shoulder and divider to the left. His front tires lost traction during his swerve and spun his car until it was past perpendicular to my on-coming one.
I couldn't stop in time to avoid him. If I had tried to go to the left, I would have hit him head-on. If I had gone to the right, I would have hit someone else. I ended up hitting the side of his car and leaving several nasty dents in it. We both got out. No one was hurt (at least, everyone was mobile and not complaining of injuries) after 30 minutes and a witnesses phone call later, the police arrived. Soon after, the tow trucks arrived. It's at this point that the only fortunate event in this not-so-tragic-as-AIDS-in-Africa tragedy occurred. The guy in the Matrix was given a ticket. The police officer told me that he was the one at fault. This was good, since the only insurance I had was liability. The bare minimum allowed under state law. It's just cheaper that way.
So hopefully this guy's insurance company won't be a bastard and will actually pay for my repairs and the tow and even perhaps a rental while my vehicle is made fit to drive again. At least, I sincerely hope so. Anyone else have to deal with something similar? Bad experiences? Good ones?
