it is interesting to me that itunes STILL doesn't have the ability for you to say "this folder is where all my MP3s will be found" and then have it auto scan that folder (and all subfolders) on a regular basis for updates.

Picassa has figured this out. Why can't they?

Not good enough, unless I am not understanding something on that page.

I shouldn't have to put my mp3s in the itunes hierarchy just for it to find new files and add them. I have a specific location for all my MP3s and it isn't the itunes folder. Having the ability to tell itunes "this is where my music folder is" and have it then do that scanning is what is missing.

It is a very basic feature of almost every other content manager I use and it's absence is VERY noticeable in itunes.

not sure if you can turn that off after installation, though.

The Zune software makes it very easy, and you can add as many folders as you like and it will monitor them all. But that's little consolation to you, I know.

However, I think you're missing something. I just opened iTunes and looked at the Advanced tab in Preferences. There you can tell it where your "iTunes Media folder location" is. You don't have to leave it at the default location that iTunes chooses. I would think in that instance that it would autoscan and add new media it finds. Of course, you would want to uncheck the "keep iTunes Media Library organized" so it doesn't mess with your folder structure. It's just too bad you can't add multiple folders for it to monitor.

You would think. :) I'll test it in a bit here, but I am pretty sure I already tried this.

I know this isn't automatic, but you can just drag that folder into iTunes and it will add everything inside that is not already in your library.

I typed up about 80 smart-ass answers and deleted them all, but it really comes down to this: if you don't like it, don't use it. Much grief will be avoided and if anyone can find an alternative, it's you.

exactly, and then it disappears mp3s that end up in the wrong place, or you end up with multiple copies of the same songs between where you put stuff and where it needs it to be, instead of just looking for it there.
