This, by far, has been the best first day on a job....ever. Worked from 6:30am till 10:30pm, and saw the craziest things. Seeing that i am tired as hell, i will just run quickly by the cases i dealt with:
stroke victim
possible migraine victim
girl struck with bat multiple times
dizziness, possible diabetes
quick quote: J.R., one of my partners (there were 3 of us, dave was the other guy): "ok so i got bad news, and bad news. One, the girl we brought in does not have migraines, we were wrong. Two, she possibly has meningitis, so gentleman, we are fucked."
Actually was not that bad, turns out she did have meningitis, we just had to go sit in the ER, get checked up, cracked tons of jokes, took an antibiotic and filled out exposure forms. Funniest nurse there was this chubby, thin haired, old asian guy with the most flamboyant, asian accent. Best person i can compare him too would be Arthur Lo, who probably only sue kelly would remember. The other EMTs kept cracking gay jokes, and this guy happily, or naively, went with it.
So after getting the meningitis treatment, back on the bus (ambulance), got a new partner, a metro looking, tough brooklyn italian, and dave stayed on with me for the double shift. New patients were:
another diabetes victim.
On route to a dizziness patient, we were flagged down by the NYPD, and turns out we had to deal with a suicide attempt, the guy was gonna jump. I actually didnt want him to jump cause i didnt think i could deal with bits and pieces on my first day of work, but the other EMTs kept their finger crossed that he would. Instead, the police managed to tackle him (he was 15 stories up), and dragged him handcuffed to our bus. Turns out he was high on tons of different things, and drunk. This proved to be one of the more interesting cases. There were a couple freelance photographers, journalists there, seeing that they have scanners, and we got our picture taken lookin all professional and stuff.
Broken leg victim at a shelter
Went over to one of my partners very italian familys house to have baked ziti. Brooklyn italian families rock.
Went to central booking (aka, jail before an arraignment), and had to take a transexual back to the hospital for god knows what reason, he, she, it kept making up crap. NYPD put on leg manacles and handcuffs, and he, she, it had this strong latin accent saying "omg, you puntas think i kill you? damn bitches, you aint worth my time honey" Was quite amusing cause when we were coming in, the prison matron was this awesome old jamaican lady, and shes like, "i got an intersting one for you back there, he, she, well its a "shim"
A couple more "bullshit" calls, which involves patients complaining of random dizziness or what not, and we have to take them to the hospital.
Also picked up a brooklyn accent 2hours into the job. Im not th eonly one thats not from brooklyn, but everyone speaks with a brooklyn accent, and its not that hard to pick up. "Fugghedabawt-it"
Also, most male EMTs are whores
But yeah, basically was exposed to a disease, dealt with crazy people, saw tons of broken bones and blood, got made fun of cause im officially the youngest EMT there (next youngest is a 24 year old) and knowing quite well that i am going to enjoy this damn job
Oh yeah, forgot to mention, driving an ambulance is so much ridiculously fun, expecially going down one way streets and up onto curbs....
