Following the trail. [01]

Detective Wheeler was on his way home when the Tuning began. A familiar feeling of sleep washed over his brain, so familiar that a tiny voice inside of him cried out that this was wrong, that he should fight the feeling at all costs. The buildings around him heaved and swirled, and he swore he could hear the chittering of beetles as he collapsed --

He yawned and stood up, brushing dust off of his pants. Well, that'll teach him to get more shut-eye. The Chief would love to add to his record "sleeping on the job."

What was he doing? That's right, he was going to The Lotus Eater. He wanted to ask the carnival workers some questions. The prostitute found dead with her finger missing had been working the seedier area of the carnival. Maybe someone saw her leave with a client.

He absently checks his reflection in a parked car's side mirror before heading on his way, and blinks at his reflection. For a second it looked like he was wearing a military jacket, instead of his trenchcoat. How funny. Must have been a trick of the light.
