[06: The Surface World]

They'd been going around in a circle, Savannah decided, for hours. The subway ran down and around and up again, stopping from time to time on platforms, though none of the platforms had stairs or doors. They were just tiled depressions in the tunnel. And they were alone. No people stood on the platforms or sat on the train. Just Savannah and Caitlyn. Every once in awhile, Savannah glimpsed a side tunnel, going off in another direction. When she realized there was a pattern, she knew for sure they were going in a circle.

"Right, I'm going up front to have a talk with the driver."

Armed with only a bit of broken glass she ran out and got at one of the abandoned stations, she creeps forward to the front cabin and quickly throws back the door to reveal...no one.

"The train's controlled by a computer!" she shouts back.

But the train's computer could be run manually, it looked like. There was an engineer's chair, and switches, and a helpful map of the train routes. Sure enough, they were on a great spiraling path.

"We'll be stopping this nonsense," she commented to herself, and selected one of the side tunnels. The next time one came into view, the train switched its course and thundered down the new tunnel, thankfully stopping at a station...with stairs up and out of the subway system.
Savannah heads back out to the passenger compartment.

"So, do we stay, or do we go?"
