Alan doesn't even have time to shout a warning before Mary hurls them both toward the stairs. The wheelchair hits the first step and then seems to leave the ground, and Alan's stomach drops as they plunge downwards. Every so often the wheels hit the stairs again, jolting him and making him ache. It's only the fact that his leg is still partially trapped underneath the bent arm that he doesn't separate from the chair like that time with the roller coaster.

Eventually, he does hit bottom, with a resounding crash that finally knocks him free of the chair. His head rings as he lies with one cheek pressed against cool pavement.
