If there is anybody who knows how to get around the city it is Dr. Schreber. He knows it's all one big spiral and he knows the structure and the machines that lie underneath it all. He's used to navigating streets that change sometimes even while they're actually changing. When he sets out on his own again he heads for the center, which is the easiest place to get to anyway. It looks like there might be something big going on, something very big and very bad for the Strangers. That suits him just fine. He'd like to help make it even worse. While he limps through the streets and hides in alleys Dr. Schreber lets himself get angry, because getting angry makes him brave.

Then he reaches the center where he should be able to find a way in, but it looks so different here it surprises even him. There's a library. A big public library at the middle of it all. There's never been anything like that before. The City Library has always been a neglected looking place with not enough books and the ones it has aren't very informative. This doesn't look like that at all.

Dr. Schreber goes inside and then finds someplace to hide by the shelves before he really looks around, and up, and up. This isn't right at all. It's like the pit turned on its head, up instead of down and warm light instead of cold dimness. He's not sure what's going on anymore. But if the library is a reverse of the pit, maybe instead of going to the bottom he should climb to the top. So Dr. Schreber starts to climb. This is not going to be easy with a bad leg, a bad back, and a bad heart.
