Title: Dance
Rating: PG
Spoilers: Bounty and Crusade
Pairings: Vala/Mitchell, Cameron/Amy
Characters: Vala, Cameron, Darrell, Amy, various
Genre: Romance-y, angst-y...it's practically random Vala genfic.
Warnings: None, really
Summary: Vala just wants one dance. How hard can it be to get one? Written for sg_rarepairings 2008 Fic Battle

Disclaimer: There would most definitely have been a Camval dance scene in Bounty if I owned SG1

AN: I've been wanting to write a Vala/Cam dance fic for weeks now. It was a random desire, and just yesterday I finally got an inspiration for it. It's really not a romance unless you choose to see it as such.

Dance

"Dance with me."

He looked up from the punch table with an expression that implied suspicion of the drink's contents. "What?"

"Dance. With. Me." She drew out each word pointedly, just in case his suspicions were well-founded. "No one's going to believe I'm your significant other if we don't dance."

"You're the only one going around telling people that, Vala."

"Yes, but you're not correcting anyone, are you?" Her grin did not falter at the flat look he gave her.

"It was a courtesy." He placed his mostly empty cup of punch on the table. "I can start."

"You know, I think you're overreacting over one dance."

"You're wasting your time, Vala." The voice of Mitchell's friend, Darrell, interrupted whatever sarcastic retort Mitchell had planned, as the man made his way to the punch bowl with an amused expression. "Cam couldn't dance to save his life."

"Oh, come on now...everyone can dance."

"You haven't seen Cam try yet." Darrell made a motion with his arms that reminded her vaguely of a Super Soldier.

Mitchell rolled his eyes, and steered her away from the table. "Alright...why don't we just sit down for a bit, instead. Look. There's Gary."

"It's one dance, Cameron."

"We do not have time for this right now."

"That's not an excuse!" She threw up her hands in exasperation. "I've been punched across a room, threatened with a gun, forced to drink what could quite possibly have been the weakest alcohol known to mankind, and despite the entire event being called a dance, thanks to you I haven't had any fun all day! The least you could do is one stupid little dance!"

He glared over his shoulder at her. "I told you that you were going to be bored, Vala. You were the one who insisted on coming with anyway. It's not my fault that you were bored when I warned you that you would be."

Sam shifted uncomfortably where she was standing. Teal'c looked as if he were considering whether it would be more interesting to spend his time interrogating Ventrell. Daniel was pointedly ignoring anything that did not directly involve co-piloting the ship. Which meant she wasn't getting any allies.

She sighed, before offering him a sly smile. "You know, it's alright if you can't dance. It's not like we'll tell anyone, and I can dance well enough for the both of us."

Mitchell made a disgusted sound. "I am not having this conversation." He looked determinedly over at Sam. "Sam...we're going to need some non-disclosure packages."

--

"Oh come on. Work with me here!" She sighed, and stubbornly planted herself in front of him. The rest of SG-1 had either gone back to the base, or back to what they had been doing before the bounty hunters had attacked. Which was to say Daniel was back out researching things, Sam was trying to find a way to prevent further attempts at tagging, and Teal'c was off...on some Jaffa planet.

She'd opted to stay and help clean things up purely on the virtue that it kept her out of the base longer.

Mitchell sighed. "There's not even any music to dance to, Vala."

"Its not about the music, Mitchell. It's about the rhythm."

"No."

She gave an annoyed huff. "Does you mother know how you treat your dates?"

"You know what, I think you've told Mom enough stories."

She made a frustrated sound. "You mother can dance."

"I never said--" He cut off abruptly, expression screwing up in irritation. "Fine."

She blinked, and grinned. "Really?"

"One dance. That's it."

She skipped triumphantly up to him, and placed her hands on his shoulders. He rolled his eyes, and plucked one of her hands up in a formal, and somewhat stiff posture, not unlike a few of the dance steps she and Tomin had followed at their ceremony.

"I never knew you were so classical, Mitchell."

"Don't. Push it."

She was sure she could hear a faintly familiar song in the distance, as they took their first, painfully awkward steps. It helped to set a rhythm to the impromptu dance. She placed his other hand firmly on her waist, and offered him a challenging smirk. When he didn't immediately pull his hand back away, she grinned.

"There, not so bad, is it?"

Mitchell snorted, but apparently managed to refrain from rolling his eyes or otherwise making a snide remark at the comment. The dance was actually somewhat peaceful in the waning afternoon, and certainly a nice complement to the day.

In fact, his posture had finally relaxed, and it almost looked like he was even returning her smile somewhat.

She offered another slight grin. "You know..."

"Cameron?"

His posture straightened immediately, and he took a step away, looking over her shoulder. "Amy? What are you doing here?"

That familiar, smitten smile appeared on his face, and he slipped past her with a vague half-wave.

"W-wait! What about the..." She trailed off as Mitchell made his way down the path with the blonde woman from the reunion. "Right."

She blew an annoying bang out of her face, and rolled her eyes. Not like there was really a crescendo of music for an appropriate dip, anyway.

A hand much too slim to be offering a finish to the dance appeared on her shoulder. "How about coming in and getting a slice of pie, Dear?"

She smiled over at the older woman. "I'd love to."

AN: So I like the odd Vala/Cam or Vala/Cam/Daniel fic, but it always seems like Cam is the odd one out--even when Cam's getting all the action, Vala's pretty much always thinking about Daniel. While fitting for canon, I kinda wanted a change of pace.
