Well, its been a little while since I reviewed Heroes, but I felt like doing it this time. I meant to for the premier, but simply didn't have time.
This review is blunt, theoretical, and to the best of my ability, unfangirly.
So. To start off, I missed about the first minute of the show, as I was out eating--incidentally it wasn't much, as they pretty much described everything that went on during it, later in the show.
This episode simply was not substantial to go scene-by-scene, so I'm just gonna cover the storylines they showed this episode (Which still omits Niki and Sylar--Sylar I don't mind ignoring for awhile, but its just an annoyance that they're still neglecting the Sanders')
Peter - His storyline has been very lacking and tired so far, but then again it has been barely featured, as to tease the watchers. It was fun to see him manifest, and interesting to see that he's gotten DL's (and therefore most likely everyone in the Plaza). I'm perplexed about where he got the electricity. Its been said that he has all of Sylar's, so its a very good chance that he got it from Sylar--but given the 4 month skip, the writers could have brought someone in. Aside from his powers, however...its been quite boring and uninteresting. Amnesia? Blackmailing him into working for them? Token love interest? There's...just no point.
Angela - I honestly hope she dies soon. I doubt she will, though, which is a shame. As for her assailant, and the big baddie...I'm starting to think they're umbrakinetic. They certainly only act in the dark at this point, and vanished in the light (or were unable to continue their assault.) I personally am doubtful that they simply stopped due to witnesses.
The only other thing of note is that she admitted to having slept with Kaito...which I am not really surprised at. What interests me about that, however, is the fact that she mentioned 'it was a long time ago', and the convenience in which the writers would have in making Hiro and Peter brothers. Especially given the dual roles of heroism they hold, and the fact that Hiro's mother has never once been so much as mentioned. It would be cute, if a little contrite.
Matt - Its good to see him working as a cop again, although I still miss Audrey. Maybe they can bring her back in later in the story. However, Matt needs to learn some finesse about his telepathy. Its one thing to make decisions in action with telepathy, but I was hoping he would treat interrogation as stylishly as he did the doorman at Kirby Plaza's sky scraper. Clunky move, Matt. Don't get yourself fired again.
Bennets - I love that Sandra still knows about Claire, and its not something they have to dance around at home anymore. However, I'd like to see more Lyle. I wanna see him be more than that stand in that pops up once in awhile. Claire's storyline so far has been much more featured than Peter's--but far more boring. I feel like its all been done in the first season already. Wannabe Zach, who's trying too hard to be Zach. I almost wanted her to inform him that someone else already gave her a copy. Any references to Zach are too much to hope for, though,I'm sure. I just wish her story would get past the school angst and teenage drama, and her thinking she knows better than Noah. Its annoyingly repetitive. Also. Stop mutilating yourself pointlessly. Honestly. What are you going to do with that toe?
I cannot stand West. At all. I hope his departure from the show is swift.
Noah, however, I love more every single episode.
Mohinder - I continue to love the way Mohinder has morphed from his clueless and annoying scientist days. Obviously Mohinder's keeping his sekrit work from his little 'family', as well. Nice to see the way he reacted to the Haitian's stubbornness. Good to see the Haitian back with HRG, but I'm still not sure about how loyal he is.
Hiro - Hiro is by far my favorite part of this season so far. Maybe its partly because I love Japanese period stories, but I love his heroics, and his silly romanticisms with the 'princess'. I still hold out hope that he'll become the Kensei of legend, but with Takeo having a revivification (or reincarnation, if his 'next time' comment means anything), and being a main character, that hope is slim.
Twins - I've yet to see anything interesting in their storylines, aside from the simple fact that they are twins. I keep thinking that Alejandro is going to die soon, though.
Misc - I like that they're revealing the characters were more intertwined than we saw before. This season has been far slower than the last one, but I'm hoping its going to be real Heroes soon. I'm skeptical about this new Bad being worse than Sylar...and am intrigued at the idea that Sylar might not be a bad guy this time around.
Overall - This was a really disappointing and flat episode. It felt like it was only barely getting started 50 minutes in. I'm eager to see more of Hiro's story, but cringe at the fact that Claire's contrived storyline is going to be taking presidence most likely throughout the first half of the season. This is not the Heroes we left earlier this year--I found myself more entertained by Journeyman than Heroes. Come on, Kring, gimme the good stuff back.
