That vac-bed thing looks and sounds very cool. Do you have any more pictures of that?

How much pressure does it put on you? Can you breathe very well? What's your mobility like while encased?

That one has a gas mask built into it, so it's easy to breathe in. While you can't move your head much except a little side to side, there's no pressure directly on your face. The pressure is heavy enough to keep you from being able to move any more than a few inches at a time in any direction.

I actually liked the one without the gas mask in it -- no eyeholes, complete darkness, breathing through a tube -- better, although we had to wear earplugs and an eye pillow to keep the pressure from becoming too uncomfortable on our heads. Gas masks actually kinda freak me out. :D

It sounds really interesting. Does it translate sensation very well? I mean, can you feel someone touching you through the material?

Yes -- you can feel both touch and temperature through it. Sensation is kind of muted, but being immobilized and unable to see makes up for that, as you might expect!

Kind of a partial sensory dep sort of thing? No movement, no sound, no speech?

Close to it. You can hear through it, enough to hear when questions are asked of you, but the prevalent noise is the sound of the vacuum running! And you can be heard, rather muffled though. Betka made someone.. not me.. scream like a girl in it, and I could hear it just fine from outside.. ;)

Now I'm in trouble.

Do you get all sweaty and sticky in those? How long can you stay in one?

Wow!

I guess I got kind of sweaty, but not a lot. The vacuum is constantly running and pulling air out, so if you're moving around, any space you create is instantly sucked flat. Since you can't move very much and your breathing is slightly restricted (by the pressure and by having to breathe carefully through a tube).. only a person who naturally perspires a lot or who's really nervous would sweat very much, I guess.

Betka said "ten minutes" is about as long as anyone should stay in but I think that's got more to do with running the vacuum for that long than leaving a person in there. I think we all tried it for somewhat longer than ten minutes but I could have stayed in there for an indefinite time. It wasn't exactly comforting, but close -- I just felt very comfortable in there.

I got a lot sweatier wearing the rubber dress, which also doesn't breathe at all.. ew.
