X/1999 - Discussions on character's sexuality/couples

X spoilers!

Especially Kamui & Fuuma, this question's been haunting me for a long time! After quite a while, I finally accepted them as a sort of couple or twisted romance (depending on if Fuuma was himself or as /Kamui/) but at first I didn't see it that way because I only support canon pairings.

Seeing Clamp's artwork of them & re-visited certain ( Read more... )

I actually really like CLAMP's refusal to label their characters as far as sexuality goes, even if it seems like they have clear preferences. (Don't care much for the whole One Single Special Person thing, because I really don't think that's the way love works at all, but that's a different issue.) But Fuuma, for example -- I very strongly get the impression that sexuality and romance are just not things he's ever thought too much about even at his age, though I certainly think he could/would have come to love Kamui given enough time. I can't really speak for him as /Kamui/, but then his actions towards Kamui seem, to me at least, to be more an issue of power dynamics than sexual attraction. (If you think about it, it's very similar to the interaction between the two sides of Hinoto when the darker/"evil" one was trying to overcome the other.)

I think Kamui loves both Kotori and Fuuma -- and Subaru too, despite the fact that he knows he doesn't have a chance there romantically (and I think Subaru loves him too, though certainly not the way he cares for Seishirou -- the love he has for Kamui is philia, the love between friends, not the eros he feels for Seishirou). Despite his gruff nature at the beginning of the manga, it's clear that Kamui loves pretty deeply (especially as a Dragon of Heaven), and that his love seems to transcend gender.

As for Kanoe... she seems to be an extremely physical person in general, and so I don't think her affection for Satsuki need necessarily be interpreted as sexual (though again, it is Kanoe, so I suppose there's no reason it couldn't be, if you wanted to look at it that way). After all, Yuuto and Satsuki are the Dragons of Earth she's had around the longest, so it only stands to reason that she'd be closer to them than the others.

As for Saya, like others have said, it's not that she liked Tohru too; she says outright at one point (I think it's in someone's -- maybe Kotori's? -- dream, if I remember correctly) that Tohru was the only one who mattered to her, and it's questionable whether or not she loved Kyougo at all (though I honestly can't believe that she didn't at least come to care for him a little, even if she didn't love him; their family life seemed too happy for that).

Er, sorry to ramble.

Good point by comparing /Kamui/ to Hinoto's evil side & Kanoe too.
