X/1999 - Discussions on character's sexuality/couples

X spoilers!

Especially Kamui & Fuuma, this question's been haunting me for a long time! After quite a while, I finally accepted them as a sort of couple or twisted romance (depending on if Fuuma was himself or as /Kamui/) but at first I didn't see it that way because I only support canon pairings.

Seeing Clamp's artwork of them & re-visited certain ( Read more... )

I agree it's quite confusing.

On the overall, I agree with what jjblue1 wrote. I personally tend to support the "special person" / hitsuzen theory, which is obviously a main motif in CLAMP's manga.
It means that I logically accept the possibility for Subaru to fall in love with a female version of Seishirou.

But, I also agree with what you said about gender being an important issue (in TB as well as in CLAMP's other works but especially in TB).

Therefore, my theory is that :

- Seishirou is 25 and he's aware of his sexual inclinations towards men (so, yes, he's gay).

- Subaru is only 16, he's shy, hung up and undoubtedly still confused about his sexuality. He may be straight, gay...or even bi.

But if one take a look at Subaru's personality, his strict education, his position towards japanese society & his family as an Omniouji - isn't Subaru supposed to sire an heir someday to continue the Sumeragi line? - and on top of that the background of japanese society which seems to be not very tolerant...

Given all of this, I would say it takes Subaru more "endeavour" to accept his love towards a man / his "gay" sexual orientation and therefore give more strength to his feeling, because it means he's ready to face society/his family to claim his love for Seishirou.

As for the rest, only CLAMP knows !!!!

(Is that clear ? 'cause I fear it's not)

Yes, thanks.

At the time, Seishiro(u) might've not had an interest at all at 25 as no one knows when he started to love Subaru which is also a question. I don't think he is gay or bi at all because there is no interest in a gender overall, just Subaru, which happens to be a man but if he was female, it might've ended up the same way for Seishiro(u).

As for the Sumeragi clan, I suppose it could be a cousin or another relation & who's to say that every Sumeragi will be straight? In the manga (though it's mentioned in the anime) his clan might've even died out since Subaru isn't part of that clan anymore (I don't know if you're read the manga so I didn't want to spoil it if you haven't.)

Sure I read the manga ::at least ten zillions times::

I was just trying to say in my previous post that a relationship between two guys, moreover with this difference of age -and the fact that Subaru is underage- has more contoversial potential than a classical "a boy & a girl" love story.

So I think that this is an important element in a manga about social criticism of japanese society, where frail people -old people, disabled people, weak people-are left on the fringe of society.
