Dear Lisa,

As a belated response to your LJ entry, Wednesday, Feb. 21st, 2007 9:42 am - I want to see the world! :

The following mission statement for LIFE magazine struck a powerful chord in me when I was in high school. I cut it out and put it on my bulletin board where I could see it every day. It even came with me to college where it inspired me, even though my path was not the one described so eloquently. I still have that clipping. It has been tucked away in a drawer now for many, many years, gathering dust along with other early dreams of who I could be and what I could do with my life. Your journal entry made me remember it. I pass it along to you, for what it's worth:

"To see life; to see the world; to eyewitness great events-to see strange things-machines, armies, multitudes, shadows in the jungle and on the moon; to see man's work-his paintings, towers and discoveries; to see things thousands of miles away; things hidden behind walls and within rooms, things dangerous to come to; the women that men love and many children; to see and to take pleasure in seeing; to see and be amazed; to see and be instructed. Thus to see, and to be shown, is now the will and new expectancy of half mankind." -- mission statement for LIFE magazine, written by Henry R. Luce in 1936.

Love,
Mom
