Taeyeon has everything she needs.

No one evoked her cackle like Hyoyeon and Yuri did. When she cried and turned her back to the cameras she’d never mind if she happened to face Tiffany in the process. Sunny gave her the truth, straight up, even if it hurt. As irritating as it could be, Taeyeon drank more water, tried to sleep more and limited junk food, all because of Seohyun. Taeyeon knew everyone who didn’t know Yoona personally was an unlucky soul. No one was a better shield than Sooyoung and it had little to do with height.

What she offered them, she didn’t know but she gave up what she could. Somehow their dynamics worked and Taeyeon wouldn’t question them.

And Jessica?

Well, Jessica was fickle. There wasn’t a steadiness in her, and Jessica laughed at the jokes no one else did. She bothered you until she was annoying but for you to cross her earned you a cold back at every apology or gentle hand of appeasement. Then she would find your fingers in the next moment, lean against you and that was that.

It was dynamics, but a different set, much more misunderstood and convoluted. Taeyeon would pull and Jessica pushed hard enough to put Taeyeon on her back. Jessica forgot limits and instituted her own rules Taeyeon tried to follow with futile, but earnest, effort. Taeyeon cracked the jokes everyone else would cringe at, searched for Jessica in her bedroom, judging her demeanor carefully because a wrong touch meant a night alone. Despite their relationship, Taeyeon still enjoyed Jessica’s company.

They would talk.

“How was your day?” and “How was yours?”  (Were always answered with a synonym of fine.)

“You tired?” (When were they not?)

“Have you eaten?” (It was usually yes, just to end it there.)

After the camera had their smiles and was filled with their trained responses, Jessica was a little barer than the morning, the makeup gone and costumes back on the rack. Jessica wasn’t so intimidating then.

“You planning on letting your hair grow out anytime soon?”

Jessica twirls the ends of Taeyeon’s hair between her fingers, senses preoccupied to notice Taeyeon’s eyes on her.

“I like it short.”

Jessica’s hand leaves Taeyeon and she frowns, remembering how naked she felt when she cut her own hair for the Tell Me Your Wish promotions.

“I don’t.”

“Then I suppose it’s a good thing it’s my hair.”

“Everyone thinks you look better when it’s longer.”

“Except me.”

Taeyeon is treading on thin ice and her boldness might cost her a peaceful start but Jessica is never far from overturning her opposition. Where Jessica’s face shows anger, her hands never support it and fall away to Taeyeon’s persistence. Then Jessica loses all fighting steam and permits herself to a weakness Taeyeon adores. Bored stares turn into fluttering eyelashes and Taeyeon sees her in every way a camera can’t capture. All the best ways.
