You loved her, you did, but it was the love a boy has for his favorite toy, and beautiful in its innocence. She was your first, your last, your only-but it was not true love, could not be, because you both were children.
You were a killer, yes; a soldier, yes; a hunter, yes-but in spite of all that, a boy, nonetheless.
She taught you to live; she opened your eyes to true freedom, the kind Manticore would never give you. She awoke something in you that Manticore could never truly beat down.
Oh, they tried, though; they tried to erase the memories, to brainwash you back into a mindless killer. They tried to break you.
And you let them think they succeeded. You lulled them into believing you were their soldier again.
You loved her and you killed her. She loved you and she saved you. It was not a fair ending for you or for her, and at night you dream of it going another way. But you always wake to the real world and she is only a memory, playing on endless repeat in your head.
And now you sit, tied hand and ankle, in the house that haunts your nightmares. Her father holds a gun in your face and you could easily disarm him, kill him-easy as breathing and just as instinctual.
But you sit and you scream at him to do it and you wonder how far you can push him till he does. He is angry, maddened by grief, and tears well in his eyes.
You say her name, a plea-
And Berrisford pulls the trigger.
